Sixth build request in several years. The last one you guys helped me with has been an amazing system ( http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1738443 ).

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc

I need something that is silent, will run linux or freebsd, and will support dual NICs and Wi-Fi (5GHz would be nice), so that I can do packet capture, traffic shaping, and security. . This is the unit I'll be plugging in before my router. Behind my router will be all my wireless devices, my two NAS boxes, and my gaming PC. There may be times I will want to sit the device behind the router. But ultimately, the machine will be my WAN facing device. I currently use a direct-Ethernet IP with no modem and don't trust the safety of my router.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?

$600 give or take

3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.

US, Bay Area, California

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.

Case, matx or mitx, mobo, cpu (multi-threaded), 2GB RAM min, silent small SSD (no data housing), fan-less, quiet, low power but with enough horsepower to do torrent control, packet shaping, firewall, logging.

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

No parts to reuse. I guess I have a mouse and keyboard I can attach to it when necessary. Don't plan on connecting it to video output unless necessary. Would prefer to VPN/shell into it.

6) Will you be overclocking?

No

7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?

1080P at the moment

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?

This week or next week. Could wait up to a month. Don't know if BF will be worth it.

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? UEFI? etc.

Dual 1GB NIC, Wi-Fi (5GHz would be awesome)

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?

Plan on installing Linux or FreeBSD.

So pre-made builds tend to work out cheaper? I'm concerned with getting the wrong kind of processor that won't be powerful enough because of the no-fan requirement.

If it's just acting as a router and/or firewall, that atom is more than enough power. But later tonight, I'll see if I can set up a DIY setup.

Thanks much Dangman.. I think I want it to be able to do logging and maybe even some torrents with external drives that are sitting behind the router. Looking for high speed, low watts, and that can run with no fans. This premade I linked apparently has 64 bit driver issues because of the the IGP, which is no good.

.....Pick two.

In Linux, BSD, or Windows?

low watts, no fans > power
Just need enough power to handle network software

64 bit issues on premade: "PFsense 2.1 works for 64-bit, but 2.0.3 and below won't properly install in 64-bit without some serious fiddling due to video driver issues..." from http://www.amazon.com/review/R1IP7M...8KB5YCK&linkCode=&nodeID=&tag=#wasThisHelpful
Then don't use PFSense 2.0.3 and below then? If that's it for the 64bit issue, then the setup your posted is a pretty good choice if you want a fanless setup.

Thanks.. I decided to opt for something with a little bit more power and universal compatibility.

Since I didn't hear from anyone else and I wanted to buy soon, I decided on this setup that I put together in the last two hours. Hopefully, it'll work great for my needs. I'll leave it up here in case anyone wants to copy the build. I think it's powerful for an itx, fanless, and low power. All the pieces were all highly rated.

Why did you go with the Ethernet card? It appears to me that the Morex T3410 doesn't support the use of any expansion cards.

Crap. You are absolutely right. :<
Either the motherboard and ethernet card now has to go back, or the small case. :<

I need help finding a replacement. Gonna get hit with restocking fees either way :(

OK went with this board (double cost of the other board, but I'd prefer to keep the chassis small)

MB - $199

Actually found a used one on Ebay that comes with 4GB of DDR3 for the same price.

Don't go with jetway as the quality of their mobos are not good.

OK what do you suggest?

The eBay guy cancelled on me.
"Thank you for the quick payment. Unfortunately I will not able to ship the item until November 1st as I just left my office and won't be back for another two weeks."

So I either replace the mobo or get a mini-itx case that is small. I couldn't find any that didn't look huge compared to the Morex.

Would a PCI angle rise work?

To answer your earlier question: A PCI angle riser is not going to work since that case has ZERO expansion slots.

Anyway, that Supermicro motherboard seems to be an ok choice. The fact that it has two Intel NICs is a nice feature. Intel NICs tend to be far more reliable and faster than most 3rd party NICs. Thus, even if you had gotten a case with an expansion slot, that Syba card would have been a piss-poor choice for the money.

OK bought'd. Next week all parts come in, but won't build until next weekend. Will post back here. Thanks much.

I was able to build the computer last week. It took about two hours to make since it was a small space to work in. I had to disassemble the case completely to get the connector frame in place. The case allowed me to do this though. Here is the picture of the final product.

I wish I could have found a motherboard for cheaper, but other than that, the system ran Sophos wonderfully. Thanks for everyone who posted's feedback.
