Hey guys, I'm finally deciding to upgrade my old 2003 AGP based system and start again from scratch. It's had a very good run and I tried keeping it afloat upgrading to cards such as the 7800GS at the end of the AGP life, but it's time to finally move on.

Problem is, it's been so long since I built the system that I barely know what I should be looking for these days. I know I want an Intel quad core Q6600 or slightly better and can figure out the big parts eventually after looking at benchmarks, but I have no clue about what memory, motherboard or how powerful a power supply is needed these days. So that's why I came here;). Even memory seemed to be so much simpler to choose back then :p.

My budget is in the 700-1000$ CAN range, monitor not included. The Canadian dollar dropped so I know I will be paying a bit more right now, but my budget is soft.

My old system was a mid-high end but not extreme end system for it's time (i.e. got a P4 2.8C chip at a time when the 3.2 or 3.4 was at the top), and I am looking for a mid-high end system now. I am willing to spend money for a good part, but there's a point where the price jump simply doesn't match the performance increase. I'd rather upgrade later

I can search for deals after once I got a solid base and know a bit of what I'm looking for. I'll probably be building it myself again. I may do some modest overclocking, but still looking for a solid stock system if I decide not to do so.

The system would be mainly for gaming, but I also do video editing and recording (i.e. Youtube videos) which is why I will be going quad core over dual core. I am looking more for smooth video recording while gaming at a good resolution, then max resolution AA maxed gaming. I have an Intel bias especially with the current chips on the market. While I've used solely Nvidia in the past, that's not set in stone.

If someone can get me pointed in the right direction and let me know what to look for especially in the tougher pieces like motherboard and memory, it would be greatly appreciated:). Last thing I want to do is buy parts and find out later they are not compatible:p.

Three questions:

1) Which monitor/resolution are you using?
2) Which games/programs are you (going to be) using?
3) Which stores are you going to purchase everything from?

1) My current monitor is a 19inch 1280x1024 LCD so I am limited on that part, but also use my 42inch HDTV 1080p as a second monitor. I'd expect to upgrade my current monitor in a year or two.

2) I'm not playing many current games since they are just too tough on my computer, though I have BioShock and Oblivion. I'd want to be able to play games like Crysis though and be a little future proof.

3) I'll be purchasing from Canadian stores, i.e. NCIX and Memory Express.

I'm going to come up with a list of common parts recommended here:

Cooler Master RC-690 ATX mid tower case
Corsair VX550 550W power supply
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 quad core Socket 775 processor
Xigmatek HDT-S1283 CPU cooler & ACK-I7751 retention bracket (optional)
Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L Intel P43 ATX motherboard
G.Skill (or Corsair XMS2) 2x2GB DDR2 800 dual channel RAM kit
Western Digital WD6400AAKS 640GB SATA300 HDD
Samsung SH-S223F SATA DVD burner
HIS HD4870 1GB PCI-E 2.0 video card

If you were to look for everything on that list, how much would that cost you?

About 1260$ tax and shipping included, though a lot of these items can be pricematched or bundled (i know that even newegg.ca has the Q6600 for 25$ cheaper for example). Also the dollar drop has inflated prices a bit. Good base start though, thanks.

To reduce some of the cost, you could:

- Swap out the RC-690 for a different case, like the Antec Three Hundred.
- Omit the CPU cooler (and retention bracket), especially if you have no intentions of overclocking anything.
- Choose a smaller capacity hard drive, like the WD3200AAKS.
- Get the HD4850 instead of the HD4870. However, if you play game primarily on your HDTV, the HD4870 would be the better choice.

I started researching a bit more now, and see that HD4850 in crossfire beats out an HD4870 in the most recent hard review in games. I can get an HD4850 card for 200$ CAN (170$ with mail in rebate) compared to 370$ for the 1GB version HD4870. I also realize that the DS3L motherboard does not support crossfire, and I need to switch to a board like the DS3R which would add an extra 50$.

So basically my choice comes down to
2 HD4850 in crossfire + crossfire supported MB
1 HD4850 + crossfire supported MB, with a 2nd HD4850 to be bought at a later time (or just upgrade card altogether)
1 HD4870 1GB
1 HD4870 512MB card

Does the extra memory in the HD4870 make that much difference to warrant the price increase? What have others done in this situation? If I want the option to upgrade to crossfire, will the 550W power supply be enough or will I need to go to 650W? My budget is soft so I am not overly worried about going over budget, but I do want to spend my money wisely. Right now though I am leaning towards the 1 HD4850 + crossfire capability.

Sadly I'm kinda in a rush with the plunging loonie (3 cents alone today!), if I wait too long my system will cost an extra 100$ then it should in the next couple of days (heck NCIX has already upped the Q6600 to 272$ CAN, so will be buying from another store which has not yet updated for the currency).

Go ahead and grab a board that supports CrossFire (like the DS3R). But unless you game primarily on the HDTV, stick with one HD4850 for now.

Regardless, get a 600+ watt power supply (preferably one that is rated for SLI/CrossFire and 80 Plus). If you can find it at a (comparatively) low price, though, consider the Corsair TX750.

+1...

Thanks for the help with the suggestions for a good mid-high end rig. In the end I upgraded to the Corsair 750W as suggested since it was only 15$ more then the 650W. I was really battling myself, but in the end I settled for one HD4850 for now instead of going for an HD4870, and may get 2nd HD4850 for cheap later, or upgrade my video card altogether. I don't have any games or a monitor which would push the HD4850 much yet anyways.

Just to give you an idea of why I felt in a rush to buy this system, in 2 business days the prices at NCIX has jumped tremendously. I bought most of the stuff from a local store online that hasn't yet adjusted fully to the currency drop, and 2 items from newegg.ca which had by far the best prices out of the Canadian stores. The price i put up for the Q6600 on NCIX.com at 249$ which was already adjusted for last week jumped to 272$ today:eek:. I bought it for 232$ from newegg instead.

Here's the guide of what it cost me for those Canadians currently battling with rapidly increasing prices (also bought Vista).
