Hey guys, I'm finally deciding to upgrade my old 2003 AGP based system and start again from scratch. It's had a very good run and I tried keeping it afloat upgrading to cards such as the 7800GS at the end of the AGP life, but it's time to finally move on.
Problem is, it's been so long since I built the system that I barely know what I should be looking for these days. I know I want an Intel quad core Q6600 or slightly better and can figure out the big parts eventually after looking at benchmarks, but I have no clue about what memory, motherboard or how powerful a power supply is needed these days. So that's why I came here. Even memory seemed to be so much simpler to choose back then .
My budget is in the 700-1000$ CAN range, monitor not included. The Canadian dollar dropped so I know I will be paying a bit more right now, but my budget is soft.
My old system was a mid-high end but not extreme end system for it's time (i.e. got a P4 2.8C chip at a time when the 3.2 or 3.4 was at the top), and I am looking for a mid-high end system now. I am willing to spend money for a good part, but there's a point where the price jump simply doesn't match the performance increase. I'd rather upgrade later
I can search for deals after once I got a solid base and know a bit of what I'm looking for. I'll probably be building it myself again. I may do some modest overclocking, but still looking for a solid stock system if I decide not to do so.
The system would be mainly for gaming, but I also do video editing and recording (i.e. Youtube videos) which is why I will be going quad core over dual core. I am looking more for smooth video recording while gaming at a good resolution, then max resolution AA maxed gaming. I have an Intel bias especially with the current chips on the market. While I've used solely Nvidia in the past, that's not set in stone.
If someone can get me pointed in the right direction and let me know what to look for especially in the tougher pieces like motherboard and memory, it would be greatly appreciated. Last thing I want to do is buy parts and find out later they are not compatible.
