Does this make any sense to anyone?
Setup:
Abit NF7-S
Athlon XP Barton 2500+
Kingston HyperX PC3200 CL2 512MB
350W PSU(unknown brand that came with case, had been using my enermax but its in my newer rig now).
GeForce2(also swapped good video card into new rig)
WD SE 120GB IDE (Win 2K SP3)
WD SE 250 GB SATA (WinXP)
Maxtor storage drive 250GB IDE(unreadable)
Firstly this is not my current rig, but I sitll have a lot of important stuff on both my WD drives.
So backtrack to many months ago(and I maybe have posted it on here)... I had been using the WD SE 250GB as my OS drive, and the Maxtor for some misc storage. I had some program that was installed on my older drive with Win2k on it and booted over there to use it. At that time I also copied/deleted/moved some files that were on my Maxtor drive. Then after rebooting in to XP the maxtor storage drive became unreadable.
I had asked around about this and thought it over on my own and dedicded it was just an odd occurance. Never got the maxtor readable, but it just needs a format as far as I can tell, and nothing on there I'd really miss... Just been too busy and not in terrible need of the space until now.
So tonight I was going to see what's on the maxtor if I wanted to recover anything from it. So I boot into 2k and run R-Studio on the Maxtor and find it really only has some DVD stuff I was working on. So I delete a few large files from my 250GB WD SE to make space for a recovery of some DVD stuff, to be then recopied over to the maxtor later.
However when I tried to boot into WinXP on my 250GB SATA WD drive, it wanted to run CHKDSK on my 120GB drive and it found no errors, but then it got a BSOD and rebooted before I could see any kind of message.
Tried it a few times and could not get it to boot into windows and it just rebooted before I could see the BSOD error. If I try booting into safe mode it will just sit there for 5+ minutes with hard drive activity but not going into windows. I removed the hard drive from the computer and hooked it up to my new rig. It showed up ok under my computer with a drive letter and I ran chkdsk on it, correcting some errors.
After hooking it back up to my old machine, I have the exact same problem. At this point I tried a repair install of windows, figuring the install may have been damaged... As soon as it got done with the first part where it's copying files and needs to reboot to start the actual install I get the BSOD again upon reboot.
Is there likely some kind of file table damage? I think I can recover the files by hooking it up to my new rig again, but I'd rather just try to fix the partition if thats the problem. How the heck is using other drives under the win2k OS causing these problems? I'm off to bed so I can get a clean start on this tomorrow but I appreciate any ideas. Thanks
