My friend reached out to me and asked to build him a pc.

This is great because I love to do it.

However his only requirements are that he would be able to run skyrim with any/all mods.

He needs everything computer/monitor/keyboard/mouse.

He says his budget is no more than $1,000.

That sounds great buy 10% of it goes to windows 10 right of that bat.

I have been looking at finding a prebuilt with an i5 and some crappy video card like a gt 750 or what ever.

Using that prebuilt and just replacing the video card included(if any) with a video card I have not decided yet.

Does this sound like a bad idea, or should I just do some deep research and find the exact right parts to do what he wants.

Any feedback or help you guys can give would be awesome!

Buy Win 10 from forum member "new2019". Great pricing and keys all work. I have personally used 10 Win & Office keys.

Yeah, looks good. But don't get the el-cheapo i5 6400, it's way underpowered. The i5 6500/6600 are the best values.

Do you think it is a good idea to spring for the 100 series possibly a h170 or just stick with a 90 series board and setup?

Normally it would not be so hard to get a build setup but with him needing everything not just a pc, really limits the budget for the parts.

First of all, I've stopped using PC Hound. It's an abandoned program that keeps recommending Haswell builds. Don't be fooled by the fact that we have a forum for it here, it's not been maintained since the Skylake release.

DDR4 and Z170 motherboards have matched the prices on Haswell parts, and there's far better selection available.

Let me see what I can do for you.

It's not super-budget (i.e. $700 or less), just restricted to $800. For that you can go i5, Z170, 16GB DDR4, and the 970.

I'd also wait till tomorrow for the AMD RX 480 reviews, as even if AMD video cards don't entice you, the price drop on the 970 should be another 50 bucks.

That seems like a pretty solid setup.

I have been thinking about waiting to really try a build with the RX 480 configured in.

Have you personally used a ASRock mobo? I have only ever used gigabyte/asus/msi.
