I picked up a PNY 7900 GT, stock speeds are 450/1320 and 3dmark05 pulls a 6982 score. I'm running a Pentium D 805 at stock 2.66ghz speeds. Now if I OC the video card to say 550/1500 (which is well under the "detected" speed by the nvidia app of 592/1584) the scores drop way down to 4900.

My Inspiron 9300 with a 7800 GTX scores 7500 so I find it hard to believe that this is scoring so low. Is the card being slowed down by my crappy CPU? (Conroe placeholder) I'm running 84.21 drivers same as my laptop. I have an OCZ GameXstream 600w supply powering the video, motherboard, and a 150gb raptor so nothing else is drawing all the power.

Anyone have any ideas?

Ok, just bumped the 805 up to 3.33ghz and scored a 7908 score with stock card speeds. Thats more like it. :)

Hoping OC will push me over 8000, nice little upgrade from my AGP 6800 GT.

yes, it most certainly is the CPU. I've lost the link, but I remember seeing a cpu limiting chart that specifically included the 805 at stock speeds and overclocked, and it was holding back the GFX card hardcore..

Yeah Pentium D 805 @ 3.33ghz (stock cooler/voltage) with the 7900GT at 550/1450 speeds is pulling 8420 in 3dmark05. :) Can probably get close to 9k if I pushed it to 592/1568 like the Nvidia app wants me to. Can't wait for my Conroe, probably hit 9k with a medium amount of card OC.

Thanks for the heads up guys.

Its definately the CPU limiting it without doubt.

You will only see the pentium d potential after overclocking it and iff you dont the whole system will be bottlenecked .

I have overclocked quite a few of these and it needs the overclock for it to perform.

also you will most likey get the CPU to about 3.5ghz after that you will find it quite a challenge without good memory modules.
