New build shuts off after 15 seconds or so.

Hi I just built the new rig with specs in my sig.

I have checked that all the cables for the power are connected, the 24pin atx, the 2x4pin, and cpu fan wire. Coming from a DFI NF4 Ultra-D, I was surprised that this board had so little things to have to connect to from the psu. Anyway, so i tried both having just 1 stick and both sticks of ram in the mobo, trying to load optimized defaults or fail safe defaults, and letting it try to load into an older installation of windows from my previous setup (was going to format but i dont think it matters with 15 seconds). Anyway, it always seems to shut off after a few seconds without much of an indication why. according to the bios readings, the temperature was at 31 degrees when i checked. this is with the stock intel hsf too. I dont know what it can be, but one thing to make note of is that the push pins are extremely hard to get through the board 100%. it seems as if the pins are through about 80% but the back of the board shows that it isnt completly clipped. does this have anything to do with it? maybe its not making good contact with the hsf? that would not explain the temp readings then. whats also strange is that sometimes when it shuts off, it turns back on automatically right away after like 3 seconds. then fails again. rinse repeat. please offer what your insight may be. thanks!

Yah, my guess is your HSF isn't seated properly. If you want to make it easier, get one of these, or an entire new HSF:

$5 - Thermalright LGA775 Universal Bolt-Thru-Kit

HSFs:
$35 - Scythe SCNJ-1100P Ninja Plus Rev.B CPU HSF (optional: $5 - Thermalright LGA775 Universal Bolt-Thru-Kit)
$37 - XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler (optional: $7 - XIGMATEK ACK-I7751 LGA775 Bolt-Thru-Kit)
$46 - Thermalright Ultima 90 CPU HS + FBA09A12M - Z ($3)
$50 - ZEROtherm Nirvana NV120 120mm CPU Cooler ($10 MIR)
$59 - Noctua NH-U12P Universal heatsink
$57 - Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme CPU HS + Scythe S-Flex Fan SFF21E ($15)

15 seconds for a short? doubt it, but double check anyways I guess.

would the short cause any permanent damage, or having it unseated properly cause any permanent damage? what im concerned about is that there may be a gap in between the cpu and the garbage intel hsf. any tips on how to get it seated correctly? its really difficult to get the push pins 100% past the hole in the board. booklet instructions arent detailed enough with pics.

i initially put the board inside my case without it being screwed in, and just left it (stupid of me). but now i have it under an antistatic bag and im actually able to run it for a full 15-20 more seconds before it shuts off automatically.

i already bought myself the xigmatek s1284 from a forum member on here, ass well as the retention bracket w/springs and screws from sidewinder computers prior to building it. the itch to start got the best of me i guess. crap on another thought, even though the bracket says universal from sidewinders, will it fit the new 4 heatpipes of the s1284? thanks.

I just have a quick question..is this a known good working PSU that you're dealing with? I've seen it where a PSU will operate for 20-30 seconds..just long enough to log into an OS GUI then crap out...

It's just a thought.

it sounds more like the hs isnt on properly.. and the cpu overheats and shutsdown.

other than that, try disconnecting all non-essentials and seeing if it boots.. then add them in one at a time until it doesnt boot... then you found yer problem ^^

dont know if this means much or has anything to do with it, but as i was trying to install the stock hsf, i accidentally pushed the northbridge heatsink with too much offloaded pressure and it kinda snapped up a bit on 1 side. it seems to be installed with pushpins as well. hope it is ok since i just tried applying pressure to it back the way it was. the pushpins look secured from the back though, unlike the hsf.

rofl that could definitely be the problem...

try taking the HS the northbridge, reapply paste, and put it back on.

thanks everyone, resolved the problem. turns out it was the cpu heatsink afterall. should i be worried at this point? seems like its working fine so far, but has it taken some serious damage? should i try to send it back to intel and hope they give me another one?

CPUs have mechanisms to shut themselves down to prevent serious damage. So, hopefully, your chip should be fine. Just run some prime/orthos tests and monitor temps. Core temps should remain under 60°C during full load.
