Ok, I understand that teenage harassment is no laughing matter. However, the term “textual harassment” just made me lul a bit. I guess I’m just a sheltered news guy since this is the 1st time I’ve heard of the phrase. Can’t say that I’m surprised though, considering how prevalent SMS text messaging is among teens these days.

Youth experts say many teens are so immersed in texting culture that they are uniquely vulnerable to the growing problem of “textual harassment.” “Kids don’t feel like they have the right to turn off their phone and not respond,” said Julie Kahn-Schaye, program director for the dating-violence intervention program at Transition House in Cambridge.

kids these days, bitch, cry and whine over someone else making fun of them......aww poor babies

“Kids don’t feel like they have the right to turn off their phone and not respond,”

.....:(

People are really fucking insecure these days.

Damn unlimited texting plans, who the hell created them in the first place?!!!!! and I though myspace was one of the places to harass people.

Instead of fixing the problem yourself you're going to complain about it to someone else? Leave it to the law/government to dictate this stuff?

Geeze, I mean... this socialistic BS is getting ridiculous.

One of the dumbest thing I've come across

If they can do something as simple as ignoring it, then that's their problem there

Kids are kids. Parents are the ones that should be doing something.

I went to see the Watchmen the other day and there were two under 10 year old kids sitting in the same row with me with their parents. It's one thing if you're talking about a teenager or something like that, but under 10? Come on.

I used to be a teacher in high school. I would tell a parent that they were the problem, and they would tell me I was being naive and that if I wanted to have a good relationship with my kids, I needed to give them whatever they wanted . I thought that someone was naive and it wasn't me.

Textual harassment? Take the damn phone off the kid if he/she doesn't know enough to not respond.

Stupid post or most stupid post?

This has nothing to do with you buzzword "socialism". What the fuck are you talking about?

What does this have to do with the topic at all? The kids are the ones harassing each other therefor it is them causing the problems, not the parents who have no idea they are being assholes to each other.

The parents are the assholes for allowing their kids to have phones when the kids aren't aware enough to know that they are not under any pressure to respond to a harassing text message.

to think when we are seniors they will be our presidents and doctors... sigh... apocalypse is inevitable after all

Wtf are you talking about? I'm pretty sure the kids know they don't have to respond they are just compelled to do it because they have fragile self esteems and feel the need to defend themselves. You are also a teenager, aren't you? Probably one without a phone. If not, grow up and realize how things really are.

Did you even read the article? Kids obviously feel like they have to respond, so they do. We're not even talking little kids. There are 15 year olds who don't "know" that they don't have to respond. Defend themselves? Do you know anything about sexual harassment? But don't worry, I'm sure YOUR opinion is right and the Department of Justice and the Transition House in Cambridge is wrong.

Parental involvement = 90% of problem solved. Yes, I have a phone, and I haven't been a teenager in quite some time ;).

do not say lul, this is a scam that cool kids like me created

to put it in english: cool kids like me dont say lul

you know...back when I was a kid we used to harrass other kids properly.

wedgies, noogies, headlocks all that fun stuff. If I had worried about someone "passing me a note" (ie texting) saying I was gay or ugly or whatever I would have missed the person pasting the kick me sign on me.

Sticks and stones have broken my bones but names have never hurt me.

we are in so much trouble when these bottle fed kids grow up and realize that their mommies can't help them put their pants on anymore.

Look at the current state of the US. Its already happening. Bailouts, no personal responsibility, no accountability. The doom train is picking up speed.

I didn't get a cellphone until I was a freshman in college. Kids need a phone to call mom to pick them up from the movies. That's it. Kids pressure their parents and their parents succumb to it. Block messaging, especially picture messaging.

Hell, a girl I knew in high school had rich parents. They bought her a Lexus SUV. It all starts with the parents.

Sure as cell phones have cameras, young girls will take "intimate" photos of themselves that'll end up on the internet, bullying/teasing is simply keeping up with the times. Textual harassment? fucking please. At least though with this there's a record of the harassment.

Oh and I'm soon to be 35 and I still don't have a cell phone :p

The "Department of Justice and the Transition House in Cambridge" is just a name on the building. These same "textual harassment" kids will probably be working in that building when they grow up. lol

Awful convenient to always lay the blame on the parents and not the kids themselves. I guess kids don't have the ability to think or make their own decisions. I would have to say getting a rude text message is a lot better than getting the crap beaten out of you. The kids these days are soft...

and round.

If parents did their jobs, kids would have a better ethical/moral/intellectual foundation on which to base their decisions.

Kids are soft though.

Solution, natural selection?

Yes I'm sure you were an angel as a kid, especially with that attitude and outlook you have today. Here's a hint. Not everything a child learns is life is taught and instilled in them by their parents. Parents can only do so much to guide a child from those kinds of things but not only can they not be everywhere always, kids are still kids and will to kid things like be assholes to each other.

Now, are you don't playing armchair sociologist, yet?

Not everything is taught by their parents, but children will emulate their parents and their parents values to a great degree.

Maybe you need to do some more research on the role of parents in a child's psychological makeup?

Yes. I agree to some extent.

But what about the children who turn out to be rapists and serial killers who were raised by loving parents. What about children who turn out to be homosexual but were raised by heterosexual parents or vice versa?

Parenting is important but personal morals, accountability, and ethics is equally important. I argue that parenting AND personal experiences (apart from parents) AND society raise the child to how they develop as an adult.

^^^ agreed, although that's obviously using an extreme examples seeing as most loving parents will not produce rapists and most heterosexual couples do not produce homosexual children.

Many people are raised by good parents and are taught morals and the difference between right and wrong and still choose to do impossible things like be mean sometimes.

I think you need to reevaluate your expertise.

However the VAST greater majority who are raised by good parents and are taught morals the difference between right and wrong choose to NOT do impossible things like be mean sometimes.

Is it really so hard to believe that the role of parents is important? Parents aren't the only factor, but they are the most significant factor. You have absolutely no research to back up your argument.

i grew up almost directly opposite to my parents...

also, when i was growing up i was overweight, i got made fun of, a few fights later i wasn't bothered anymore...nowadays you get in a fight and you get sued... text harassing is a natural progression of this issue, its the sterilization of life itself.

don't get me wrong, i like texting because i hate talking to people...on the phone or in person.. but text harassing defeats the purpose of harassing, since its at a distance...it removes the payoff or at least delays it.

haha you think most people with good parents are never mean

It's funny because they've been saying that since the fifties..
