New Games Require Online Validation Every 10 Days?

If these kind of trends increase and hint a pay per month; i won't even bother with PC gaming anymore.

won't be getting these then

and yet again pirates will get the better product.

how exactly is this kinda stupid behaviour suppose to stop piracy again?

Well that saves me some money considering I was going to buy both of them the day they hit the stores. I've never bought a Steam game and if this is where Bioware is headed I will never buy another one of their games either.

This seems a little excessive. However, I really want to play both games, so it's something I'm probably just going to deal with. Saying no to them based on principal won't gain me anything, and I'll still want to play them.

That is because, clearly, you have no principals. If some stranger walked up to you on the street and called you a thief, you wouldn't take offense to that? People steal from stores all the time. Yet, I don't get accused when I walk in the door the BB. No one even remembers how foul SecureROM is? It's a blue screen nightmare.

I know this is gonna freak you kids out, but I don't own an IPOD. Can you guess why? Besides, my PSP does a better job anyway. Get this, I don't even need a special program to put music on it.

Is there a warning on the game box that internet access is required to play the game?

What's next? Retinal scans to make sure the person playing their games is the one that bought it? This shit is going too far.

That, or we'll be donating sperm samples. I was looking forward to Mass Effect before I saw this pop up today. I'm really getting tired of the fact that everyone from software developers to mafia-owned recording companies seems to have forgotten that this is *MY* PC, not theirs.

Oh boy, here come the guidos. I need to go lock the door... BRB.

i'm like a lot of people here...i'll use a cracked .exe to play the games i own - because i HATE changing discs...

thats why i'm not all wrapped up in console games....i want to install a game, and put away the disc...that way, whenever i feel like playing something, i don't have to go hunt down the disc....call me lazy, but if it's installed on my hard drive and taking up GIGS of data, i'm not hunting for a disc for a few KB'S of data...(or megs now maybe....)

it really ticks me off, because i bought it thinking it wasn't going to be released on pc...and as time went by, my want to play it over took me...annnnd of course they annouce less than a month after i bought it that it was coming out for pc....

if i did download it, it would only be because i like the pc controls better....and forgive me if you don't like this point of view....but i have already paid for the "license" to use it....regardless what platform it's on as far as i'm concerned...not like i'm going to be playing both of them at the same time!

Wow. I was actually going to try Mass Effect and I was curious about Spore. Looks like I won't be buying either. I could stand a one time registration. It looks like I am not the only one who is going to get screwed by the lack of constant web access.

Bioware, you can't tell right now but I am giving you the middle finger.

A day later..

"What the!? My key isn't working! Someone... generated it with a keygen and now I'm screwed! HELP!!!"

You're right because Mass Effect has a massive multiplayer experience.

Kinda sad that a great game like Mass Effect wont be enjoyed by many on the PC because of this (even worse for their bottom line).

Wow, well, even though Mass Effect is an awesome game, I will not be recommending it to my friends anymore. I own it for the 360 and have gotten at least five of my friends to buy it. Not anymore. As for spore, so much for pre-ordering that one. It looked awesome, but I'll get by without it.

Yes, this is me, a game buying consumer(Purchased 15 X360 games, and another 5 PC titles in the past 12 months), saying fuck you very much.

Yeah, this is upsetting to me as well. I used to pirate games back on my Amiga when I didn't have the 35 - 40 dollars, the cost of Amiga games back then.

The last 5 years I've been buying games, I have all the major releases. I take care of them, the boxes are like new and the discs are put away and, I'm somewhat proud of my collection. A collection that totals $2,000 - $3,000 in software.

But when I read this kinda crap it pisses me off.

I have 5 words for any company that wants to really push this piracy shit into peoples faces.

1. Newsleecher
2. Giganews
3. Usenet
4. Quickpar
5. Winrar

Online Validation, oh no! Ahem, Bioshock had online validation :) Look where that got them, granted it took about 2 weeks after release for it to be cracked but, alas, it was cracked. It's the legit buyers that have to deal w/ this BS. Pirates still skate free.

actually
osted: 08-31-2007 01:43 PM Subject: Bioshock - Darkcoder / LOLCATS / FLT
it was only 10 days or so.

if its made of 1's and 0's it can be cracked.

i downloaded bioshock, i played it for a while, like an hour or so. then i uninstalled it. aside from the story there was really no point in me playing it anymore. same enemies over and over, lame weapons. some of the abilities were good, but nothing worth me buying or finishing. i went to youtube to find out how the game ends. i dont care what you say or how angry you are that i didnt buy it like you did. why the fuck should i? its not a fun game, its not worth me buying. if you bought it and enjoyed it good for you. had i bought it before i could try it i would have been hella pissed since i didnt find it fun enough to play all the way to the end and i cant take it back to the store once i open the box. i would have just been all pissed off about the $60 i just wasted.

i dont know why they go through soch measures to prevent the inevitable. if its got a protection someones gonna crack it. plain and simple, anyone thinking otherwise is deluding themselves. i miss the days of shareware. how come they dont do that anymore? instead all we get is trailers showing off cutscenes as gameplay, and demos that are so short you dont get to feel what the game is really like. i actually downloaded the demo for bioshock it seemed fun enough. it had a timer on it limiting your play to 5 minutes...

i couldnt figure out why at first but after i played the full game and saw how repetitive and boring it was aside fro the rpg elements of the... wtf do you call the abilities? whatever. after about an hour of the same enemies over and over doing the same predictable shit... i was like meh. uninstall. i thought about buying it simply because i did play it longer than what i would consider a test run. but then i remembered the feeling of dread i got whenever i thought about firing it up again (before i decided against it and fired up CSS instead) and i said to myself. games are supposed to be fun. i shouldnt be dreading playing a game like i dread doing chores. at which point i decided fuck take2. they arent losing any money from me because im not going to buy it and since i only played like 2 levels you cant really say i stole it since i didnt keep it. at best i had an extended test drive.

i know a lot of you are going to tell me i should have bought it and im some kind of scumbag asshole or whatever because i downloaded it and played it and that alone means i should buy it. to which i say fuck you. you like it so much buy 2 copies then. im off to play some tf2. a fun game i paid for because i support people making fun games and not boring tedious "games" .

is it really that big a deal that the game does a split second check with a remote server every 10 days? seriously? an internet connection is *that* hard for you guys to come by?

this is to prevent piracy, it doesnt mean that the company is calling everyone a thief..... seriously, are you guys so thin skinned?

*sigh*

Guess I'll have to pirate those until they come to Steam like I did with Bioshock.

While I'm not a fan of the online revalidation, I'm even less a fan of of SecuROM. Damned thing made my LiteOn drive make more noise while trying to load Crysis than, well, fucking anything else in my computer room. Grinding, popping, hell with that.

I'll only buy games via Steam any more...I can wait until they come out. I'm not sacrificing my system to the anti-piracy gremlins.

How many people are going to buy this crap blindly without knowing about all this bullshit. Hopefully it causes an outroar and screws these companies.

This system they put in place isn't that bad and you don't need to keep the disc in the drive either. I'd bet a majority of the users here have never gone more than 10 days without connecting to the net. To me it is silly for people to say I'm going to warez it now because of this protection. What you're doing is screwing the developer and every other honest user by doing it. Go BUY the game then download the crack if you don't like the protection scheme, or don't bother buying or playing it in protest. But don't just go out and download and play the game for free.

While I don't like this scheme, it does sound a bit more friendly than the one that came with the boxed version of Bioshock. The only thing I dislike about the protection is the limited 3 activations. It'll be more than enough for most people, but with no confirmation that uninstalling the game returns back an activation, it is a really bad idea.

IMO the way it should work is this 10 day online activation thing and no need to have the DVD in the drive should be the default. Should you not be able to activate it again in 10 days, you should still be able to play a previously activated install so long as you have the DVD in the drive. That way you're not dependent on the server in the case when you haven't played in a few weeks but for some reason can't connect to the net that particular day. Also running the uninstall program should cause it to connect to the server and return you back an activation.

Is there a warning on the game box that internet access is required to play the game?

From what I read on the MEPC forums yeah the box clearly states an internet connection is required to play the game.

This seems a little excessive. However, I really want to play both games, so it's something I'm probably just going to deal with. Saying no to them based on principal won't gain me anything, and I'll still want to play them.

Sure. You can do what I always do in a situation like this. Just buy the game and crack it, I don't have any negative feeling for that at all. Afterall, I did already buy it and did my part, what does it matter what I do after I already handed over my cash? That's all they wanted anyway.

Give me your constitutional rights. Don't worry its for your safety.

QFT.... you guys are way too whiny about the smallest things....

LOL, how does this have ANYTHING to do with my constitutional rights.....

unlawful search? ummm not really, its just checking that the proper files are in order and that you are using a valid CD key....

steam essentially does the same thing ... i do recall having to log onto it to play the half-life 2 episodes....

it doesn't do anything else.... and it only does it once every 10 days.....

:rolleyes: bunch of drama queens... seriously... if all PC gamers are this touchy, its no wonder that the biggest and best game makers are going to consoles....

It has nothing to do with being sensitive. Fundamentals are all wrong.

"QFT.... you guys are way too whiny about the smallest things...."

Your kidding right?

Being treated like a criminal is ..... whiny?

I mean, look how many people have responded so far? Lots. Kinda looks like people all share the same consensus.

So, some lone voice comes along, stands alone and tells the rest to QFT?

GG, you just made yourself out to be a huge ass. So yeah, I guess that means you and anyone else ( along with the software companies ) that wants to show a total lack of common sense and decency toward hard working honest people .... can, more fittingly ... QFT.

And now, introducing: software that comes with a stick up your ass...

Wow, don't want to touch that with a 10 foot pole, unless there's a patch to remove the annoyance. I don't want any DRM, I don't want any "phone home", keep it away, keep it the f#@k OFF my PC.

You seriously don't see the connection?

I didn't play the Half Life 2 episodes either and I don't use Steam either.

How do I have to spell this out. Not everyone has internet access. I could tolerate a one time activation. However carting my desktop to someone's house every 10 days is rediculous. I don't expect you or anyone else to care, because as long as the majority is happy its cool. Just don't pretend like I am being obstinate.

:rolleyes: bunch of drama queens... seriously... if all PC gamers are this touchy, its no wonder that the biggest and best game makers are going to consoles....

No, big game makers are going to consoles because that is where the money is. They have saturated the PC market and a lot of PC gamers recognize the non-innovative game mechanisms that they have seen for years, and thus will not buy the product. Essentially: PC gamers wont put up with shitty games, console gamers don't know any better.

Personally, all this game protection and update bullshit got on my nerves so much that I will only purchase games through steam. With steam, there is an added value given to the copy protection. I get perpetual updates, automatically. No CDs. If I ever lost my steam folder, I just tell it to redownload everything. With CD Checks and Online keychecks, what is the added value? Oh wait, there isn't one.

My bad. You kinda rained on my parade. I always thought it meant Quit F'ing Talking .... and that kinda sucks it doesn't.

No wonder I always come in here end up getting pissed off all the time.

Anyways,

What really needs to happen is just better PR. I don't have a problem with them taken steps to fight piracy. There however needs to be better dialog between the companies and what the general public ends up seeing and dealing with.

Fight piracy all you want. Just make it as transparent as possible.

anyway, dont most MP3 players restrict copying songs back from the player once they are loaded? OMG, they are treating *me* like a criminal! what about stores that have video cameras inside-and outside the establishment? gee... they are filming me, they are treating *me* like a criminal! why do cars have locks on them? damn people for thinking *i'm* a criminal! When I load up steam so I can play a half life episode.... wtf valve, stop treating *me* like a criminal!

 these measures are to stop, or at least impede the real criminals, *not* everyone else.... seriously how can you people get it so wrong.....

You SHOULD be right, but, you aren't. What you are doing IS the morally correct thing to do, even though it is illegal, but, IMHO the specific law which makes it illegal is BS and should itself be trashed, and certainly, not respected heeded.

Heres and idea to every developer; LOWER THE DAMN PRICES AND INCLUDE A SIMPLE DVD CHECK. Boom, more sales, less piracy b/c of a more affordable price nearly everyone is happy.

Do you have to call up your car's manufacturer every ten days or it won't let you in?

I will refuse to buy it. If I'm on a trip with my laptop, and don't have internet access, I refuse to have software I OWN be held hostage.

? wireless hotspot? hotel access? you do have 10 days....
of course you are going to come back and say that you will be somewhere where there is no internet access for more than 10 days, to which I say... if you are going to be in a place where u are away from the net so long, i'm sure you'll be doing stuff way more important than playing a game and it wouldnt be that big of a loss....

... besides, as the net becomes even more ubiquitous, these situations will become less and less frequent
