Ok, this week i just closed on my brand new house. The thing is that my new house is fully wired with Cat5e ethernet cabling. As i am sure you know means i can set up a gigabit network. My planning is to buy a gigabit router, a gigabit switch and a AP.

The way the network will be set up is <Internet>------<Gigabit router>--<Gigabit switch>--<AP>------Clients

The products i am getting are.

So what do you think of my network. Any problems? Now of better hardware that is cheaper? all input is needed. thank you in advanced

the question that comes to mind is, "Why buy a gigabit router?"

Are you going to be pushing more than 100 MBit through your WAN connection? Are you even going to be coming close to it?

Personally I'd be interested in upgrading to an 8 or 16 port Gig-E switch, and instead of buying the wireless AP seperately, buy a router with built-in WiFi. That's me though, and this is your network. As far as the parts you've spec'd, they'll get the job done.

Grats on the house.

A router with a GigE port is a waste unless your WAN connection is >100 megabit/sec.

I second the recommendation to just get a nicer switch (maybe one that supports Jumbo Frames, so you'll be more future-proof).

Yeah defenitly agreed. Get a router with wireless (WRT54G perhaps) and a better gbit switch. Much better preformance by throwing all your gigabit clients on one switch instead of uplinking between gigabit router and switch.

also check to see when they punched down your cable at your jacks and your patch that they really punched them down well and kept the twist up to the jack... though it is totally possible to run gb stuff on 5e the terminations have to be perfect... thats why cat6 patch pannels and jacks are designed differently...

Did they run it all in conduit. If they did then score you! You can upgrade your wiring so easily then. My house its all just built in the walls and its a slab foundation...so its a pain in the ass to run anything (think punching out backside of walls to drill).
