IMO, the veloci's argument is more of replacing your existing 150GB raptors with devices that have more storage, better/equivalent performance, and reducing the noise footprint by removing them from the "heatsink" and suspending them.

What exactly ARE the velociraptors for? Conclusions of reviews onnly say "omg, soo good, so fine" but do nothing to say what the hell the practical uses for these things are. Could care less about benchmarks and 1 second faster level load times.

well it might not be worth it so some, but I can definately feel the difference of a faster HD, one second here and there makes the computer feel much more snappy IMO. Esp since the HD is still the slowest bottleneck of the computer.

Here are some reviews

People will say that the extra speed is not that important, yet complain about the Green Power drives performance all the time...

Wheres the WD640 benches though? Thats what I want to see :(

I have to agree with you 100%. you can noticeably feel the difference between a raptor and any other sata drive. just the crisper, snappier operation is apparent. its worth it to me but i can understand how younger people, students, lower income types would see this product as being frivolous. just like a lot of people see my spending 30k on a built engine and twin turbos for my Z was frivolous. its not for everybody. i just dont understand why people have to hate. its not for you then just move on.

Sounds like more of a show off post than anything else

if i was a show off then i wouldnt sporting a E4300 cpu with a 8600gt in my sig would I? if thats what you would like to think then go for it.

boy this one is cruising for a lock.

I can tell you that when large load times are involved, IE Crysis, then you can definitely feel the difference a raptor makes vs other drives. A full second plus, but in normal computer use, no its not going to make worlds of difference. Noticeable? maybe. Is it worth it, to me yes, but to poor people.. no :p Actually, to each his own. Some people just don't think its valueable enough to spend money on.

I'm sure faster "feels" good, but is it worth it?? Loading programs or game levels might be noticably faster, and that's nice, but so what? If you're a heavy photoshop or film editor or you're churning through databases, then it might have a tangible value to it.

And there are other, more creative ways to get that performance more cheaply. For example: raid 0, partitioning to outer tracks, separating tasks to different disks, ram caching, ram drives, flash storage.

I guess thats subjective....its worth it to me.....then again, I wear walmart sneakers, cause $100.00 sneakers just ain't worth it..:)

Newegg is a reputable company and its unlikely that the products they sell are defective.

Newegg, for any other merits, can't pack a hard drive to save their lives and won't listen to years of customer complaints about their crappy packaging or the numerous unnecessary drive failures it causes. Fortunately, this tends to be the only part that is so vulnerable, so for most other things it's less of an issue.

i used to have 74gb raptor raid 0, and now i have 80gb velociraptor raid 0, and i can tell the difference in everything. i could probably tell using 1 v-raptor over the 74gb raid 0. if you are just looking for a fast boot drive, the new wd re3 250gb drive absolutely smokes, and is available for probably 70 bucks.

Faster than the raptors?

missed it again! Jeez

Man I felt the exact same way when I was looking for a cheap VR. I missed the $200 deal twice and I just settled on getting the 80 VR from FLECOM a while back, exact same specs but smaller drive size. In any case, I resulted in just bookmarking the OPEN BOX VR link and even though I am not on the market for them, wanted to see how frequent they get in stock. Not as frequent as I thought but definitely not rare, its just it goes OOS extremely fast, way before anyone can post the deal on here for slickdeals.net without the knowledge that it will be OOS within a few minutes.

Hey why can't I change the title of the thread, the title that is scene when browsing the Hot Deals section? I went to edit OP and I changed the title name but apparently it doesn't change the name scene browsing the forums.

There is no 80 GB VR only a 80 GB Raptor, VRs only come in 2 sizes, 300 GB and 150 GB and the only one that you will find online as far as I know is the 300 GB one. Here is the WD product catalog to prove it.

Note: none of the VR drives will fit into notebooks (and PS3?) because they are too thick.

FLECOM had some of these 80 gig VRs. They were pulls from Dell? servers I believe. He posted pictures and they did say 80 gig and Velicoraptor on them. As far as I know, you cannot buy these as seperates currently. They were thought to be short stroked 150 gig VRs.
