Today’s patent infringement lawsuit is brought to you by Nokia, Apple and the number “10” (for the number of infringements). Nokia claims infringement on GSM, UMTS and wireless LAN standards.

The ten patents in suit relate to technologies fundamental to making devices which are compatible with one or more of the GSM, UMTS (3G WCDMA) and wireless LAN standards. The patents cover wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption and are infringed by all Apple iPhone models shipped since the iPhone was introduced in 2007.

Apple will no doubt file a countersuit claiming to own the rights to the “i” in the word infringement thereby nullifying any claims against them by anyone. ;)

Actually, i think Apple will sue Isaac Newton's descendants for using an apple to demonstrate gravity....

Well, there is also an "i" in Nokia, so they (Nokia) are screwed now!

What do other handset manufacturers do, license these technologies from Nokia?

Either they license, or they've chipped in, and Apple hasn't done a thing.

Took forever for Nokia to get this suit through to this stage.

The timing is interesting, only days after Nokia posted that they lost money in the same quarter Apple posted record earnings (again).

The article said devices from 2007 on so it's only been two years. It takes time to reverse engineer products and software to make sure they are actually infringing on IP. And they probably took this to Apple first to try to get a licensing agreement and Apple probably told them to screw off.

I hope Nokia wins. Yeah, I am a Nokia fan and I despise Apple, but if the "other companies license" line is true - Apple is in trouble.

Would be nice to see Apple dragged down a few notches, maybe then some other people in the US would realize they were not the first to do a lot of this stuff, just the first to bring an awesomely polished UI to the table, which I do thank them for as Nokia finally has to do it too!

I'm not a Nokia fan, I just happened to use my N-Gage as a primary phone up until August this year.. fucking thing just wouldn't break, compared to every other maker I tried.

this is a bad thing? I'm actually hoping for the same thing on my Samsung right now

Just another example of "Can't compete with Apple? Litigate"

Exactly.

This is just yet another company in a socialised country (Nokia) finally hitting the wall where it can't compete with the free market (Apple).

What technology has a socialised country ever invented? Nokia don't have a chance, they can't compete in the real world so they try to tax steal from a competitive American company in an effort to delay the inevitable.

Next up will be ARM. Socialism and 'free healtchare' won't help that Brit company when Intel's Moorestown makes their technology 10 years obselete.

but the iphone is 3g! thats 3 times as quick as 2g !

You know, normally I will vouch for you and even applaud you. It's too bad that all that you use as an argument sounds so far from reality it's scary.
The U.S. Capitalism is no longer a Capitalism and the Socialist country you think you know you talk about have to invent things if they want to survive, plain and simple.

Socialists like to think you can have innovation without suffering.

I like to know that blood has been shed in the free market and I get that with Apple. It's like evolution, elegance of design comes when the weak perish and the strong reap the rewards.

Nokia has become the weak, I want no part of that. Maybe when countries like Finland start to shed the dross from their populations I can think about it again.

So it's OK for Apple to be doing the same thing, but heaven forbid another company do it to them?

If your argument was even remotely true, Nokia never would have reached the top of the market where they are now.

Repeat after me: Apple... has... not... invented... anything! (Relating to iPhone hardware)

They took a touch screen and slapped it on "just barely good enough" hardware.

Where Apple has completely and utterly outshone Nokia and the rest of the world was with the UI. Notice I didn't say "software" or "operating system"- Those both pale in comparison to what you can do on an actual smart phone, including all the limits and restrictions you get with all these devices.

Apple has an outstanding, polished UI that did for cell phones what Nintendo did with the Wii for consoles. I have to give props to Apple where it is due, however the props go no further because they haven't done anything else unique.

Please please open your eyes to the possibilities that are out there. I was just another stupid American until I went searching for a new cell phone for use on AT&T - Back before the iPhone came out.

One thing lead me to another and before I knew it I was the proud owner of an Unlocked Nokia N82 - No carrier restrictions and no limits.

Apple comes with limits but a well tested experience.
S60 or the upcoming Maemo or Android, you can fly as high as you have the talent to do so!

This story is pretty simple regardless of our opinions on it - If Apple is using the same patents that other companies are paying Nokia for, why is there a debate? Only in America can you blatantly do something wrong and fight your way out of it!

Though it does of course go both ways. :D

Dude, seriously Go back to school and learn some history. Not a single country in this Continent can compare with what Europeans have gone through. Even less the Norse people.

He'll be back in school at about 7:30am tomorrow when his mom drops him off.

Sorry, but Intel used a small "i" before Apple did...remember the "i286"? ;)

I'm always surprised how many people like the iPhone interface so much. But what do I know. I returned my Motorola RAZR after 2 weeks thinking it was the worst phone I'd ever had, and that also became one of the most popular phones ever.

I'm quite old fashioned in how I use my phone - generally to call people or occasionally send a text. And also I guess as an alarm clock. But that's about it. Of all the phones I've tried out Nokia's have always been the best to use as a phone.

I've currently got a Nokia 6300 which has a fantastic screen because it's so easy to read in any light, so for that point I prefer the screen to the one one the iPhone. Also since I only really need the screen to see who's calling or the number I'm dialling, making it small enough to fit a real keypad seems like a no brainer.

I'm sure the iPhone is great as a multi-purpose device but it's a very compromised design for a phone.

Ugh. Go away. For well estabilished countries (non middle eastern) war is old and doesn't solve shit.

By todays standards a cell phone does this: calls people, sends txt messags with a a full qwerty keyboard, view youtbue videos, play shoutcasts from other countries, play videos, etc... My blackberry does all those things. I use my old phone a motorola razr as my alarm clock but that's all it does. Don't get left behind like you'e 60.

But u cant have my "i" !!!
i can see MS getting sued for Windows 7 soon
Then Apples sues MS ams sues SOny sogoes for nokia Awwww what a hatefull world !

I have a computer for that kind of shit, which does it better than any mobile device, and with a proper monitor so I don't have to squint at a tiny screen to see everything. Why should I feel the need to buy a $500 device which does maybe a tenth of what my computer or any decent laptop would do, and does it worse?

Just another example of "Can't compete with Apple? Litigate"
Yeah, never mind if any of these litigators actually have a proper case against Apple. Because Apple can never do any wrong, can it?

how many more years until these neolithic troglodytes finally die out thanks to some aspect of natural selection, seriously.

regarding the lawsuit, interesting to see indeed, the article makes it sound like all of the tech is licenced by other companies from Nokia, as some in the thread speculated, in other words Apple is on hot water if they've basically ignored their licence obligations, should be interesting to see what comes of this

Computers (i.e. full desktop) will always be superior, but what you can do with; with those little devices is awesmome.

And for under $100 you can get all that -youtube - shoutcasts with the Samsung Propel sgh-a767. And with the propel you don't have to lock and unlock the keyboard all day long.

Couldn't of said it better myself.

I'm not surprised about this though, considering Apple's reputation of late I will be looking forward to seeing what comes of this.

I had to register just to be able to reply to this message.

Sorry, but what the hell are you talking about? What socialised country? You obviously don't know at all what you are talking about.

Finland IS NOT any sosialistic or communistic country!! Finland is as much capitalistic and democratic as any other western country. Russia is our neighbour, but so what? It does not mean anything. Calling Finland sosialistic country is ridiculous and many of us Finns would take that as an insult.

Finland got it's independence in 1917 so Finland is not any former Soviet state. If you thought it is then you are wrong.

Aside from that fact that Finland doesn't have a socialistic economy every country on this planet has contributed to technology in some form or another even socialistic ones. Rocket technology is a good example. You know the stuff that sends our satellites into orbit?!? How about BMW? Mercedes? Volkswagen?

We may live in a capitalistic country but don't think for one second that we invented everything. That's just a little arrogant don't ya think?

Exactly.

Again, Finland is not any socialistic country..

Nokia was one of the wery first companies who created NMT mobile phones in early 1980's. Nokia has also been one of the most important pioneers who developed mobile phone and radio technologies.

Worlds wery first commercial GSM network was opened in Finland in 1991. Worlds wery first commercial GSM call was also made in Finland. And try to quess who provided the network technology and phone used? Well, both network and phone were provided by Nokia. Nokia is still one of the most important comopanies developing mobikle phone, network and radio technologies.

Nokia has contributed, and they still do, so much in mobile phone development that it is impossible to create a working mobile phone whitout using technologies invented and patented by Nokia. You simply can't create a working mobile phone whitout using those technologies.

And by the way. Nokia is the global market leader in both normal mobile phones and smart phones. So it's ridiculous to say that Nokia can't compete. Nokia is worlds biggest mobile phone company so they sure can.
