Nvidia GeForce 6800 - $299 preorder 7/1 shipment

Oh, it's only 128MB...Does that affect its performance?

Doesn't seem to do much on the 9800s...

The 128mb will only really affect performance in extremely high AA/AF situations (ie 1600x1200 with 4xAA and 16xAF)

If you play at resolutions and aa/af most people use (ie 1280x1024 4xAA/8xAF) it wont make a perf. difference.

so whats this all mean, is it better to go with a 9800 pro 256bit for 200-220 or go for the newest tech 6800 for 300? i guess my question is if its really worth that extra 100bux?

thx

Hmm, I'd have to say I'm an ATi fanboy, but an extra 100 sounds good for a card that should last you another few years without having to sacrifice anything. If your going to upgrade though just make sure you have a good cpu (any athlon 64 or Pentium 4 above 3GHz). Those new cards are very cpu reliant.

The 6800NU will decimate a 9800PRO. Well, if you are an "enthusiast." I mean a GeForce FX 5900XT or 9800PRO are both probably fine for most games, but in comparison if you are into video cards the 6800NU will beat out both in features and performance by a wide margin. Definitely worth the extra $100 IMO.

Edit: Now in stock!

anyone have a link to maybe an apples to apples 6800nu review against the x800pro?

Nope, none of the reputable sites have done them yet, as Nvidia has not yet made the 6800NU available to reviewers.

However, there are some performance numbers for 3dmark03

On an Athlon 64 3400+ (stock), the card scores 9134 3dmarks (brilinear) or 9045 3dmarks (full trilinear) at stock speeds.

Looks like nVidia hasn't given up the ghost yet, I wouldn't be surprised if they do many more acts of survival by the end of this year.

yeah I have to agree with you there. But what I mean buy " acts of survival " is that nvidia isn't going to go down the drain or anything.

Infact, it would be bad if the company went out of business or something because that would put ATi in the same situation as microsoft.

I was reading here that the 6800 with 128 MB of memory has slower memory (700mhz) than the 256 MB (1000 or 1100 mhz) cards. Anyone have one of these yet and done any benches on it to compare to the 256 MB version?

you will need every bit of the 256 meg of frame buffer memory for doom 3 and hf2 dont be dooped unless you plan on enjoying the new titles at lower resolutions

Damn, thats a sweet card for that price.

I was wondering what Nvidia was going to put out on the low end, probably faster than a 5950 ultra.

Budget gamers card incoming!!!!!!!!! ;)

That is a great price. Although it does sound like its going to be using regular DDR in the 700Mhz range, its pretty unlikely to use DDR3 at 1Ghz.

So its not really a 256MB DDR3 6800, probably some sort of SE model.

The $299 6800 has the following specs:
12x1 pipeline
Shader Model 3.0
FP32/128-bit precision
128mb RAM
256-bit memory bus
325mhz core
700mhz memory
3dmark score with an a64 3400+ is around 9000-9100 (no overclocking)

IMO great deal for $299.

not a bad price for the "plain" 6800....but i'll prolly wait and get the 6800 Ultra, if I don't decide to get the X800XT instead....they may cost more, but you'll 1) get better performance, and 2) not have to upgrade again as soon.
