Off topic, cheap method to getting systems in a rack?

All I need is ATX mobo + 1 GPU + 1 HDD + PSU.... system basically costs $250... but then friggin rack case is gonna be $70 + $30 for a rail kit. Really the only time these systems are touched is to replace GPU or HDD. Having a case is just a PITA.

I know over years I've seen ghetto rack setups. Anyone know who does this often? People trying to setup cheap render farms?
 
If you are really cheap, you could just get a rack shelf, and put something non-conductive on top of it. Then just lay out the components.
 
Yeah thats what I'm thinking about now. Plus if I got microatx boards + pcie riser(so gpu would be horizontal), i might be able make the thing only 2.5U or so.

$15/shelf + roll of rubber. Wish someone else had pics of a setup like this up somewhere.
