I have an old pair of Acoustic research AR 48s speakers (must be 25 years old now). Both woofers are membraneless from transport/heat/playing them too loud.

Local hifi dealer offered 80 euros a piece for repairs, needless to say a ripoff.

I have thought of two other options:

-I repair them myself using a kit on ebay ebay
anyone done this before?

or

-I keep the enclosure, install new woofers.
but how would I find a similar spec woofer, or would I have to install new crossover/tweater/mid/woofer?

Something to note: the tweeters were both replaced by my father a long time ago, so it's pointless keeping the original sound.

Cheers.

Unfortunately minimum overseas shipping is 50$, kit costs $22,5

Know of any UK or European based companies?

You should be able to replace the woofers without changing the crossovers if you find woofers with the right specs. Honestly, oldschool floorstanders "floor" any kind of "computer audio". I'd say it's worth it to get them fixed if you can find a reasonable european parts distributor.
