I have a few questions. I am going to be overclocking the core I7 and I need to know what programs I am going to need in order to make sure the overlclock is stable. I know I need prime 95, which one do i download and how do you make it run all 8 cores? I have cpu-z. what other programs do I need? Also, what would be a good overclock to start out with. I really appreciate the advice.

download johnny lee's orthos stress test. you can open more than one iteration. open 4 of them for each core of the cpu. go into the task manager and limit the affinity of the orthos iteration to 2 of the 8 threads available. run 3 of the 4 orthos interations as blended test. run the last orthos interation under the small fft test. with all running at the same time, you will stress the cpu 100% as well as eat up nearly of your 6gb of ram. consider throwing in a real time hdr demo to test your gpu. these two test also serve as a fair stress of your psu.

what program can I run to see temperatire ect. on this Asus p6T. I heard Asus probe II doesnt work. Any other suggestions?

the current version of prime95 will open a thread for each core automatically, no fiddling required like was the case a few years ago.

awesome. what program will allow me to see temps though? Also, is there a program that will allow me to increase the cpu fan speed?

Not sure if i7 is supported, but some common temp monitors are

Intel Thermal Analysis Tool
SpeedFan (Fan Control)
CoreTemp
RealTemp

Speedfan is not accurate. Both coretemp and realtemp (get the latest beta) work fine.

Here's where the latest RealTemp beta is always located:
http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/3/3/1794507/RealTempBeta.zip

It includes support for Core i7 as well as the newest Core i7 CPUs with CPUID = 0x106A5

106A4 - C0
106A5 - D0

My competition Core Temp is located here:
http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

It should provide the same temperatures but RealTemp does a better job of reporting MHz for Core i7, especially when using Turbo mode.

LinX is a very nice front end for LinPack testing:

Prime95 with multi core / multi thread support can be found here:
http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft/

Go to step 3 on that page and download the appropriate version for your OS.

If you tell Prime95 to test all of your memory and to use 8 threads, it certainly will.
