I am sure this has been discussed before more times then ever, but I could not find the answer.. so here ya go. I am running freeNAS and am loving it, though I only have a 160gb drive in it right now. I want to add 3 500gb drives in a software raid 5. On my MB I have 2 Sata 1.5gb ports and a full IDE channel free. I also have 2 PCI slots free, no PCIe is on the board. So, my question is should I throw a PCI SATA card in for the 3rd drive or run IDE? I am leaning towards the SATA card because of swapability. Any speed differences or other problems I will have? I know I will have a bottleneck with the 3rd drive, but which way should I go to keep it as low as possible without buying a new mobo.
