Physicists say they have developed a way to use lasers to accelerate storage and retrieval of data on hard drive by up to 100,000 times.

In a study published in the specialist journal Nature Physics, a team led by Jean-Yves Bigot of the Institute of Materials Physics and Chemistry in Strasbourg employed a "femtosecond" laser, using ultra-fast bursts of laser light, to alter electron spin and thus speed up retrieval and storage. "Our method is called the photonics of spin, because it is photons [particles of light] that modify the state of the electrons' magnetisation" on the storage surface.

Oh yeah. Top 10 best last name ever.

It's great and all, but when will they be able to shrink it down and make it affordable? There's tons of great tech out there for making things faster, but the price to do so is astronomical.

cool next gen HD p0rn with higher speed access.

or something like that. :D

There's always someone who would still enjoy. I would also after some drinks.

100k times faster, faster than what? Faster than the consumer, enterprise, or current fastest?

Sometimes I wonder if the best use of a physicist's time is figuring out faster ways of accessing data.

Physics with an application? As opposed to the scores of physicists trying to prove/disprove string theory? I would say so, yes.

And it will accidentally the whole planet. No, really. The whole thing.

Yes, it would be a terrible thing for the whole planet to suddenly.

This looks much faster and not only that, can be used in place of ram, rom and HDs. Use electrons as storage and move them along nano size wires with the read/write heads remaining still. I hope it comes to fruition.

Its still going to be a long time before the tech is incorporated into household computers. Im going to give it 30 years
