Hi,
I don't keep up on the latest deals/product innovations in PCs. I suddenly have to build a computer as a christmas present for someone. I have a 6800 GT PCI-E graphics card laying around, but besides that I need all the parts. I plan to buy the case and monitor at my local store to save shipping. Which means I need everything else.

My requirements are very simple, I want a reasonably nice, stable system. No OC, just quality reliable parts.

I need the cheapest parts and I need fast/reliable shipping because I have to have this sucker built and ready to present as a gift by christmas.

I am thinking something in the C2D 6300/6400 range. Total budget is about max $500 for motherboard, ram, HD, DVD burner, and anything else I need. Reliable parts are very important. Best bang for my buck, etc.

If someone could just tell me what to buy, and where to buy it, I trust everyone here and I would be so very grateful. I have to order today otherwise I'm worried it won't come in time!

Please save my ass! I know these forums must get about a million posts like this per week, but this whole situation was sprung on me like an hour ago, and I know everyone here keeps up on what the best products/deals are.

Thank you to whoever finds it in their heart to answer this millionth "please help me" post!

is the processor cost on top of the $500 or is it $500 for the lot?

I was hoping for the lot, which is why I was thinking a 6300, 6400 tops. this machine will be used for gaming, but it's owner is never going to OC it.

it doesn't include monitor, keyboard, mouse, or case. $500 for everything inside the case.

SLI is not important. The future owner is a gamer, but when he looks inside a computer case, he gets a look on his face like my girlfriend when she looks at a car engine. After this computer is built, it will probably not ever be upgraded. I am just hoping to build the best PC that I can, with stability/reliability being the most important factor.

I know C2D is the hot processor right now, and I was going to just buy a dell or HP or whatever, but I can't find a C2D system from them for cheap. Since I have a graphics card already, I'm pretty sure I can build a solid C2D system for less than dell/hp would charge me.

for example, I just went on newegg, plopped the 6300 in my shopping cart, and it automatically reccomended a mobo and hard drive for me.

But I have no idea if newegg is still considered the best deal. I know it was a year or two ago, but I've been out of the loop. I also dont know if what newegg is reccomending is the best deal. Here's what they said I should get:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 1.86GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6300 - Retail
Model #: BX80557E6300
Item #: N82E16819115005

GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
Model #: GA-965P-DS3
Item #: N82E16813128012

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (Perpendicular Recording) ST3250620AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

But I have no idea what memory would go well with these choices, or if these choices even actually go well together... :(

Is the bump in price from a 6300 to a 6400 a good idea? Should I shop at newegg, or does someone know of a better deal going on right now?

If a mobo/cpu/memory/HD combo could be picked out for me (that would work well with my nvidia 6800GT) that would be enough of a start for me to at least get the items ordered and on their way.

looks good here are your ram choices

$210 2gb G.Skill DDR800
$100 1gb Wintec AMPO DDR800

also what about the psu?

would it be better to go with this for $201 after rebate?:

OCZ Gold 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2G8002GK - Retail

I only ask because I dont recognize Gskill or A-Data as brand names, but i've heard of ocz before.

For PSU I was thinking a nice antec. I am aware that a solid psu is required for my videocard, which requires an aux. power input from a 6 pin plug on the end of the card. Most of the PSUs that come with the cases Im looking at seem adequate. I will probably get those at a brick and mortar, cause shipping on heavy things like cases and psus is highway robbery,

unless you know of a place that has free shipping then i might consider it.

oh wait, that ram is ddr2, huh... I imagine that is not supported on the ds3, eh?

I hate to do this, but you're on a budget (with no old ram to use), lol... so yes, thats a FAR PSU recommended on the bottom of this list:

$181 - Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 1.86GHz
$105 - Biostar TForce965PT Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express
$100 - Wintec AMPO 1GB (2x512MB) DDR2-800 3AMD2800-1G1K-R
$58 - Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3160811AS 160GB 7200 RPM SATA300 8MB Cache
$32 - Samsung 18X DVD±R w/LightScribe SH-S182M/BEBN
$0 - Ultra V Series 500W Power Supply ($40 - $40MIR)
==========
$476 + tax and shipping

:p

OCZ Gold? People have been having problems with their Gold DDR2 series sticks... so good luck with those.

Now that is what I call a reccomendation! Could I bump the Mobo up to the gigabyte with no negative consequences? I trust gigabyte products, and i've never heard of biostar.

Thats the second reccomendation for wintec, are they a solid company? I hate almost nothing more than trying to diagnose faulty ram, so if there's another company for slightly more cash that would definately perform better, I'd prefer to spend the extra money.

Why do you "hate to do this to me" is it because normally you wouldn't reccomend one or more of the listed components?

Yeah you could easily bump it up to a gigabyte no probs if you wanted to save money you could go for Gigabyte S3 which is still a good board :)

here's my build, if there is anything anyone would change, let me know asap! I'm mostly concerned about the ram. I hope it's solid.

A-Data is one of the largest memory manufacturers in the world. Yah, I was surprised, too, lol.

go to newegg and look at the cases they offer free shipping on, this will probably save you money from buying one locally, or at the very least let you buy a better case and not get screwed on shipping.
