An odd question I'm sure, but I was wondering if I can somehow take apart an old laptop, and use the LCD monitor as a standalone monitor for another machine.

It's possible, but you would need the propietary converter board that the LCD manufacturer uses. These are usually expensive and not worth the effort.

Yes, this is possible. You will have to buy the power conversion unit and an interface board. I forgot the website... just do a search for laptop LCD panels and you should find them.

Adding the controller card yourself is expensive, another option would be software to use the laptop as an extra monitor, connected over a network. http://www.maxivista.com/ is one product, but I think there's freeware software to do the same.
