Notice how the parts are placed? ;)

Well the bass is strong on your MDR-V700 because they are designed for DJs. That is way the cups swivel. Which means it is designed produce bass notes loud enough that a DJ can match beats etc as they mix in a noisy environment. They are not the best for listening to good music in a quite environment like your home. That is what the Sony CD series was designed for like the MDR-CD-3000.

Do you listen to a lot of hip hop or trance?

I doubt your receiver is responsible for damaging your phones. Because you are not getting a lot of juice out of the headphone jack without a headphone amp. But the V700s are low impedance and sensitive so they are easy drive which is the actual reason your phones are loud without amplification.

On the other hand, others may disagree, but I always thought the V700s were pretty pimp looking. I wonder why they don't make them in gold? Given that they are basically club wear.

Nice receiver. Did you get it used or have had it a while?

All I listen to is hard trance, which is why they suit me perfectly. I would agree that with other genres of music, they wouldnt be the best headphones.
The amplifier does dedicate a very strong signal too the headphone jack. With the volume knob turned up a little past half the headphones are literialy blasting. I actually was looking for a volume control for the headphone jack itself to prevent the signal getting too strong. The problem is when I listen to my giant dynalab speakers the volume knob has to be turned up on the amp in order to get sufficent sound coming out of the speakers. At the same time though the headphones that are plugged into the headphone jack get alot of power as well, causing the db's to raise alot faster than that of the speakers. Its a bit difficult to explain without me typing a whole page.
As for the marantz reciever, my dad gave it to me. He had it as long as I could remeber (when I was a little kid) The thing works great. The only thing it needs is a few new lights, because a few are burnt out. I love how much you can tweak the sound with the reciever. :)
I have a spare kenwood amp, but for some reason the sound doesnt work properly on one of the right jacks on the back. I took it apart and it was way too confusing to work on. Someday ill take it to a friend to get it fixed. Probably just a bad pot or capacitor(sp?)

They look almost the same as Paul Van Dyk used in some of his video sets =)

HOw much did they cost?
I believe they are the same ones he used. I got them at best buy last year for ~$150. You can now get them off of ebay for $100, new.

Let me guess, you had issues with your mother asking to clean your room as a child? :D

so much for a portable rig, it would take me half an hour just to untangle the headphones :p

i can see a pair of beyer 770s in there somewhere lol

Here are my cans (Sennheiser HD520 II) :

And my amp (Nad Series 3020):

Do someone know my cans, my dad got them a few years ago and never used them and in the meantime the wire got messed up so I had to buy a new (stock) one to get them working.
I can't manage to get info on them so if you know anything about them just let me know.
BTW the amp is only used for my headphones, my Z640 was not powerful enough to plug them in.

I got some new cans :D

Swapped HD600 for HD650, got some PX100s. I sold my Grados, which I miss greatly. Hopefully my tax return will be large enough that I can get the new gold SR325..

Also, I'm looking for someone who does custom plastic fabrication. I'm wanting to replace the black top of the hammond case with a clear gray plastic top. Any recommendations?

I bought a pair of PX100s the other day, so far I'm really impressed. Very small and light, but quite comfortable. They sound really nice, cant wait untill I get my amp built.

Sony MDR-V700DJ's

Of course I actually DJ, so go figure :p

They sound alright I suppose. The highs are crisp, which is important for DJ'ing...but the bass can be a little washed out if you don't watch your cue monitor levels (which is bad for me, considering I spinn Drum'n'bass). I tend to have to turn down the bass on my cue channel to accuratley hear my highs, which I need to mix.

As far as computer use, they sound fine. The sound is real clear and crisp. Listening to regular music in them is a pleasent experience, the only time you start to see the drawbacks of the driver Sony uses is when you take them to extremes, like DJ'ing in a club with overly loud monitors, where you have to assault your ears with sound to hear your cue :p

My biggest complaint with them though is that they are fragile as hell. Of course, I admit, I do hold them in odd positions when using them for there intended purpose, but they have swivel ear pieces for this very reason. The fact that the pivot points on the swivels is unreinforced plastic is pretty crappy. Mine are already starting to crack after a years worth of moderate use.

I apologize for the webcam shots.

(notice the stack of as yet unrecoverable CDs for my recent FLAC project)

I have heard nothing good about the sound out of those outside of DJing but for them not to be durable is a crime for the price. Christ you should be able should be able to pistol whip people with those things!

Oooh. Modders please help me make my new found dream of repeatedly beating a Halo corpse with my "Vxxx melee" until it disappears come true!!!!

Audio Cubes or did you take a trip to Japan? I have read impresions of the SA-5000s and exchanged a few PMs with some that has the SA-3000s. I haven't heard from anyone with the A1000s. How do you like them? How do they compare to your other phones?

They are sweet looking but why do you store them on the floor? :D

I got them from a guy over at head-fi that lives in japan. So far I like them a lot. They have exceptional detail. The highs are nice and detailed without being harsh. The mids are pretty smooth and a have feel to them. Vocals sound really nice with these cans. Its a little light on the low end but seems to be improving in that area the more I burn them in. A very nice wide soundstage (although not quite as wide as some sennhiesers). I still prefer my grados for most of my music but when it comes to dvds and gaming these things really excell.

PS. the carpet fibers help open up the sound. :D j/k

Nomad Zen Xtra -> Apple iPod headphones (Sony NUDE EX71SLs or Shure E2Cs? Comfort is a factor)

My main headphones, amazingly comfortable. First ever "high-end" headphones, now they replace speakers. Turtle Beach Santa Cruz -> HD497

Yes it was the knobs that stood out. Not that I have seen thousands but in the last 60 days of bleared eyed amp watching I have never seen all the options on an amp done with dials. Dare to be different. ;)

As for maxed out meaning all the options such as to quote Mister X, "STEPS, Diamond buffer, Stepped attenuator, etc"

By the way, was that your DIY project or a builders?

Also, do you go by Flutie04 (if so you already answered the question above) on Head-fi and if so why didn't the DT-770s make the photo op?
