And how is the performance? , do you notice a big difference using a dual core over a single?

The system I was upgrading from was an XP 2600 with a 6800GT. Performance was it was night and day. Multi tasking is a breeze and gaming performance has more than doubled.

Ordered an X2 4600+ to replace my 3200+. I expect a pretty big jump that should last me another two years. I don't like to replace my system until I can double the speed...at a reasonable price.

I try to follow the same rule. Longest time I've had a cpu was the old Tbird [email protected] and P41.6A @ 2.4 for about 1.5 years each

Got a new X2 +3800
Didn't even have to order it off newegg or any other etailer. I got it from a local PCclub store for $175. (same amount for the same chip off of newegg + shipping).

bought an x2 4200 off newegg for 182 shipped last weekend and plugged it into my current system..
wts 3200 venice =P

I have an Asus A8N SLI Deluxe on the way (wish it were premium) but can't argue with the price I got and I have a brand new chipset waterblock for it by dumb luck.

Not sure what processor to get, surely an X2 of some sort. Will need a PCI-E video card too. I'll update when that happens.

Any suggestions?

Just upgrade my A64 3000+ to a X2 4200+

System:
GA-K8NS Ultra 939
6800 NU
1GB DDR

I took the oppurtunity to switch out my 4 80mm case fans for 2 92mm fans attached Ghetto style with zip ties and some stick tac for dampening. Also switched out the 120mm on my XP120 for better cooling.

In my sig, but it originally was a 3800+ X2 and an X800XL and 1gb of ram. But it quickly evolved into a case of upgrade fever!! :D First I added another 1gb or memory, then the price on the X1800XT dropped and I returned my X800XL....then I got a new job with a pretty good raise so I sold my 3800+ and put a 4600+ in it's place!!

Now I'm pretty sure I'm set...for a little while...maybe! :p

Here's my setup:

AMD X2 4400+ (Had AMD 64 3000+)
2GB OCZ Ram
Asus A8V motherboard

1 Seagate 400 Gig PATA
2 Western Digital 320 Gig ea SATA I
1 Asus DVD Writer
PNY 7600 GS AGP card (Had ATI X800 Pro, but was giving me problems)
Sound Blaster X-Fi Music card

I think I need to update my signature... :D

AMD 4600+ X2 Socket AM2

3800 X2 Toledo running smooth as silk at 2800 with 1.5vcore. Got it for $130 on Ebay.

Epox 9NPA+ Ultra. Paid $40 on Ebay. Good stable board but It sometimes doesn't boot with modules in slots 2 or 4 so I'm running 2x512 as single channel. I don't think it matters much at all.

2x512 Patriot CAS 2.5

NVS280 Quadro 64meg. Great dual head business card. I ain't gaming. Running my HP 20" LCD at UXGA. Hmmm. $30 from Ebay

Another Ebay special. Picked up a sleek CAC Centurion case with 2 DVD/rw and an ultra cool X-Connect shiny 500W PSU with the removable connectors. Real pretty. All for $100

2 x 73G 15K Fujitsu SCS drives. Cost about $100/ea. Man I love that Ebay, don't I? This is my 3rd all SCSI build this year. I know that SATA is more practical, but nothing comes close to the 15K scsi for access time. Great for OS and apps.

This is replacing my northwood 3.06/533/512 at home. A very nice upgrade; didn't cost much at all, and the company picked up the tab for many of the parts since I'm working at home a lot. Very happy with this build...
