My lucky (unlucky for my wallet?) day was the other day when I went to class, and my professor gave me a free projector screen -- we had just gotten a new one in the classroom, and they were gonna trash the old one. WooHoo! Anyways, Now I need a pesky projector to match this thing. Any recomendations on what I should look for? My price range is <1,000 Somehow, this seems to limit me quite a bit more than i would like. I really want somehthing that is capable of HDTV resolutions, but will suffice for something less than this, If I can find one with a really good refresh rate/response time (namely, something that can I can play FPS's on without getting a headache) Any suggestions? Thanks!

After using the NEC MT1065's I have a hard time going with less personally. Those however are way out of the price range you've just stated.

I know next to nothing about the lower end projectors. But if you've got 4,000+ to spend, the NEC MT1065 is a solid choice.

I've had mostly good experiences with a NEC VT660 projector, but the power-to-lamp interface just cooked a few days ago, so I dunno. It isn't even that old... It's an 800x600 projector and re: HDTV, believe me, going from a normal sized TV, to a 115" diagnonal, everything looks nice and huge and great. I don't personally have any qualms with the resolution, you might. But a projector that supports full on HDTV is going to be pretty much out of your price range. 1024x768 should be pretty obtainable, though.

I've never run into any ghosting problems on any modern projector, out of some NECs, a Benq or two, and a Viewsonic.

There's a nice looking Acer XGA projector at the 'Egg for about a thousand, the specifications looked nice, but I have no actual experience with it - This was going to be my first option to look into for a replacement, if the NEC wasn't being repaired for much less (it is) I'd be seeking reviews on that.

Also, don't depend on it as a primary display. That's how projectors fail. (See above. No, I am not the only user of the projector, just the person who tells people they'll break if they keep getting abused. )

I suppose I did need this bit of logic thrown in here. I'm going to be getting a new apartment soon, and was hoping to set it up as the display in my main-room ... The more I think about it the more it looks like I might yet opt for a DIY solution that I keep hearing so much about. Only problem is going to be trying to keep it any smaller than a twin bed -.-

Oh yes, Thanks for the recomendation as well ^^

I've messed around playing some FPS's on a NEC VT670 and I thought it was really nice. 1024x768 native res and 2100 lumens. There are refurbs all over the place for under $900. I didn't see any "rainbow" effects or whatever they are called on the NEC. I've also played on a Dell projector of similar price and it had VERY noticable "raindow" issues when stuff got moving around pretty quickly.

HDTV below $1000, hmm

Factory refurbished Infocus SP5000 16:9, 1280x720p, dvi, vga, component, blah blah $860 shipped directly from Infocus. Or get a new sp5000 for $999 after a $300 rebate: http://store.infocus.com/escalate/s...e+Theater&pls5catname=Projectors-Home+Theater

Tha sanyo Z2 has similar specs 1280x720p etc, *might* have the edge in image quality depending on application and environment, though it's a little less bright than the sp5000. $1000 new from an authorized dealer: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Sanyo-PLV-Z...881349630QQcategoryZ48654QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem. I've owned this one for a few months and like it a lot.

If you want a ED projector that'll make TV and dvd's look better then many would recommend the infocus sp4805: http://froogle.google.com/froogle?b...us+sp4805&lmode=online&sa=N&lnk=next&start=30. Some owners claim the xbox360 looks good on it too.

For ~$1,000 i am going to recomend the Sanyo Z2, i use it my self and love it, the native 16:9 is great to have as well, all in all i find it to be the best value in the ~$1,000 price range. in a year or 2 when it is time to replace my bulb i plan on selling it and getting a Z3 or Z4.

My vote goes for the Z2 as well, but the Z3 is now getting pretty close to the 1,000 dlls mark on ebay worth the extra bucks IMO.

The SP5000 is a terrible projector. Shitty blacks and a washed out image. The SP 4805 has a better image.

Yea but how about all those threads at AVS that claim otherwise? Well i don't own one so i really can't say but there aren't many HD 1280x720 choices for under $1000, especially ones that have enough lumens for gaming. The 4805 might look better with movies and television, but how does it truly hold up with gaming at its native 854x480 resolution? Some SP4805 owners do claim games look nice but once again i don't own one so i really can't say...

OP, i definitely recommend you hit up the links i posted for further research. Unless you can demo these projectors in person, you'll have to rely on feedback from people who own them.
