question about 4 pin connector with powerstream and a m/b

if someone were to plug in the 4 pin connector thats supposed to go with the 20 pin on a newer motherboard, onto the separate 4 pin connector on a p4 motherboard, is that a bad thing? there are a lot of details, but one motherboard has been fried with a flash of blue light.
 
Yes, unless you are certain the pins exactly match. That connector adds a 3.3, 5, 12 and gnd lead. The 4 pin P$ is basically for added 12v support.
 
damn, such a shame. such a dumb mistake. ive usually counted on the common idea that if it fits, its the right plug. argh!
 
I'm pretty sure that the extra 4 pin connector for the ATX2.0 spec and the 4-pin 12V connector don't fit into each other's sockets...I'm pretty sure they're differently shaped. Maybe there's someway to make it fit though.
