I am soon going to purchase a new computer I plan to put on the third floor of my house. My current computer is on the first floor. I am looking for some router suggestions and a wireless adapter.
After looking at the router recommendation thread I thought the D-Link DIR-655 XTreme draft-N Gigabit Router - Retail - $129
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833127215 would be a good choice.

Can anyone provide further suggestions and ideas on a wireless adapter?

Thanks a bunch :)

the dir-655 is pretty much the best choice for home network use
as for network adapters, intel makes some pretty good ones, I also had good look with trendnet usb wifi adapters

intel makes wireless adapters??

you sure you got the right company name there?

yes intel does make wifi adapters, but I think only for notebooks (mini pci and pci-e)
for desktop if im going with pci or pci-e i would pick something based on Atheros chipset
and if i have to use usb i like those trendnet adapters cuz they are cheap, support wpa2 and are fairly reliable.

The DIR-655 is a great router. :)

Here are a few suggestions on "matched" wireless adapters:

D-Link DWA-552 PCI Desktop Adapter

D-Link DWA-556 PCI-Express Desktop Adapter

D-Link DWA-643 Notebook Adapter

Additionally, find several other adapters below:

Linksys WGA600N Wireless-N to Ethernet Adapter
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124279
This has been used with a DGL-4500 and appears to be a nice solution. It can be placed wherever is optimal to receive the signal and connects to the desktop/laptop using the built-in ethernet.

TRENDnet TEW-623PI

Edit:

Geeks has the WN311B PCI 'n' adapter for $27.95+S/H:

I ordered one myself but haven't had the time to test it out with my DIR-655.

wow thanks a lot for all of that help. You basically did all of the work and research for me :D

thanks

they all are pretty expensive though. Do you think I need something that high quality in order to connect my first and third floor computer to the internet? Or will I be able to settle for something cheaper and still be able to get solid connection?

Well the cards match the router, in terms of the "N" standard. So in order to maximize you're bandwidth and throughput on your network (files transfers, etc) you'd want to get matching card. Of course you could always get a normal G card and be fine. The only difference really will be theoretical network bandwidth and signal strength+distance.
