Quick question about power supply in new build.

Hi. I just put the Antec earthwatts ea500 power supply into my centurion coolermaster case. I plugged it into the wall and turned it on and nothing happened(ie. the fan in the power supply did not go on). Does this mean the power supply is bad or is the power supply not supposed to turn on it's fan until other stuff like the motherboard, etc, are plugged into it? My first build. Thanks for any help.

edit: oh oops, guess I should have posted this in power supplies forum. But any help appreciated.
 
You need to connect it to your motherboard for it to turn on. You can test it by shorting pin 14 with any black ground wire on the motherboard connector. (not recommended)
 
Ok Thanks. I'll wait until I get the motherboard in and plugged in before trying it out again.
