This could possibly have gone in the memory subforum, but it fits here, too.

I am soon going to purchase a pretty cheap new system. I originally wanted a barebones kit from TigerDirect but decided to select my own parts at Newegg. The motherboard is an EVGA P55V (LGA1156, supports DDR3-1600). I was wondering - the barebones kit came with the P55V and was paired with DDR3-1333 RAM, and both DDR3-1600 and DDR3-1333 are 240-pin, so I figured 1333 would work fine in the 1600 slots.

Am I right for assuming that? I don't think TigerDirect would screw up that bad to part a motherboard with incompatible RAM - but ya never know lol. So I figured I'd ask the geniouses of [H]. :D

Thanks in advance!

there is no such thing as "1600mhz" ram slots. you should be able to use the 1600mhz ram, but when you set your build up it'll probably default to 1066 or 1333 and you'll have to adjust the speed and timings in the bios.

I don't recall ever saying "1600mhz ram slots" lol. But I wasn't going to purchase ddr3-1600, I was going to purchase ddr3-1333 and I was wondering if it would work in the ddr3-1600 slots on the board. I'm guessing it will because TigerDirect paired some ddr3-1333 with the P55V motherboard in their barebones kit, but I was just making sure because I'm purchasing the components separately, not in a combo deal or anything.

EDIT:

For reference, here are the specific components in question:

BTW, if anyone can recommend better hardware at similar prices, then sweet, I'm open to suggestions :)

well, that's what the "1600" in "ddr3-1600" means, 1600mhz. i just added the "mhz" out of habit.

i don't think you understand what i was trying to say though, there are no ram slots specifically designated to be used with "ddr3-1600", they're just ddr3 slots in which you use ddr3 ram in lol.

either way, the ram should still work.

Another question...which would be better to get? The P55V that I linked to above or this:

I realize neither of them are high end boards or anything, but my budget is limited. This motherboard uses the H55 chipset as opposed to the P55 chipset the other I linked to uses. I will be using my 9800GT (PCIe2.0) so I won't necessarily need the integrated video. I plan on getting another 9800GT for a cheap SLI setup.

EDIT: Or what about this MSI board? It looks like a pretty good deal and is only a few bucks more:

It's actually looking like a great deal for that MSI board...I just may get that. I'll be getting an i3 so I can utilize the integrated GPU if needed for troubleshooting, etc.

well, incase you don't know, the biostar board itself doesn't have integrated video, it just supports the use of the integrated gpu found only in i3's and i5's (excluding the 750/760).

if you want an sli setup though, the evga might be better for that since (according to evga's specs) it splits the bandwidth of the pci-e slots to x8/x8, whereas with the biostar they would run at x16/x4.

Just so you know, P55/H55 chipsets are nothing more than uprated ICH10R southbridges. H55 boards simply include video outs to utilize the onboard video that is on the I3 500s and I5 600s.
