I wish to upgrade my video card, but I'm not sure if going for a 4870 would be much of an upgrade over a 8800GT. I don't want to spend over 200$. Keeping it under 200$ would be great.

My current specs are:

DFI Lanparty LT-X38
Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 3.6 GHZ
2GB DDR2
GeForce 8800GT

Would I see much of an improvement or should I just wait and upgrade my entire system?

a 4870 is comparable to a GTS 250 AKA 9800GTX+ AKA 8800GTS.

If you intend on upgrading your GPU with a $200 budget, you're best bet would be a 4890 or a GTX 260.

However, I would suggest that you just save up and build a new rig entirely. A good i5 750 build would cost around $700ish at the right price.

If youd like to upgrade teh whole system that would be better, but if not you will still see improvement if you upgrade to 4870 and at least 3gbs of ram.

no the 4870 is competitive with the gtx 260 and the 4850 is competitive with the gtx 250.

4870 cards go for 125ish all day long here. A 260 is a little faster then a 4870 but they are pretty comparable. Both cards are a significant upgrade over an 8800gt.

What are you doing that your current rig can't handle? That's the only way to answer the "is this worth it" question.

A you must be getting a 4850 mixed with a 4870. To be clear a 4870 is faster then a gts250 so would be faster then a 8800gt. For under $200 I would get a 4890.

edit: dang someone get there before me.

I'm just wishing to turn on a bit more eye candy in games like Dragon Age and the likes. I don't really have the money for a whole new system and want to squeeze out a bit more life out of my pc.

I'm hoping to last until games like FF14 hit the shelves.

The most I could spend is 600$ if I really had to. But I'm thinking id have to build a low end system if I were to upgrade everything.

Oh dang thnx for fixing my mistake guys:p. You're right, I got my card mixed up. Utopia said it for me as it is comparable to the first gen GTX 260.

However, the newer GTX 260 cans the 8800GT as it has almost double the shader.

EDIT: Forget that last part. X38 doesn't support SLi.

4870 is better than the 8800gt. If your budget is $200 look at the upcoming 5830. I know the MSRP is $239 but with the prices of 5850 and 5870 coming down if you find a deal combined with a MIR you might be close to your price point.

You can find 4890's for as low as $150 if you're savvy and don't mind buying a used card. It's noticeably better than the GTX 260.

at BB they are clearing out 4890s for like 180, keeping it under 200 dollars is easy if even a B&M racket is selling them that low
