Reclining computer desk goodness (56K be ye warned)

Looks like a head-rest would do you good. Also, some flat-screen LCD's would probably make the setup a little less cumbersome. Certainly you'll get some in the future?

Have you priced 3 19" LCDS? I do not have as much money in the PC, Desk and Monitors as I would have in the LCDs. Until I find a good price, no such purchase.

I usually don't like bumping old threads, but holy shit this is amazing.

Not only that but the OP has an unanswered question up there, so I guess the thread still has some value :)

Haha wow, that is nice. It's like an extreme sport too, just without the movement. Your living on the edge when you play games with 100 lbs of monitors hovering over you, ready to topple onto your unsuspecting self. But I'm sure they're secured just fine.

No, I cant sleep in a chair for some reason. And its 150lbs of monitors. And over 10,000 views w00t!

I have picked up 2 19" mag LCDs in aniticpation of getting a 2005 for the center. The discussion of input lag on LCD's has scared me off though. So I dont know if my desk is in for an extreme makeover or not.

Disarray I don't think I weighed in on this thread back in the day but good god this rocks!! I HAD to chime in seeing that poetictech site though. They so comnmercialized your idea and that is SOOO cool. Too bad you didn't have a patent you'd be making some dough off it now. Their stuff looks really nice too. I'd never be able to afford it though so looks like I'll be following in your footsteps... :D

Just have to chime in. It's awesome! Great job. My wife would kill me if I did that.

you did a nice job but you should have a little more pride in your worl qnd do what everyone has told you and put those few extra mintues into enclosing the monitiors and such and painting it and making it look nice. i personally hate any monitors over 17"

what an odd thing to say.

disarray, i think it looks fine just the way it is. it ain't like Architectural Digest is coming over for a photo shoot. i'm sure you use the hell outta that chair, enjoy it!!

yes, i signed up on the boards just to bug yah. got any more pictures you can post of the chair? specifically the hinge and the winch system ?

i am looking at building my own and borrowing from the work that you have done.

other then that. looks like a awesome job, wish i could see it in person.

I'm wondering how difficult it would be to achieve something similar without need of a welder and cutting torch and such to build like you did. Not all of us have that kind of equipment to use. Also...in the interest of simplifying it have you thought of any way to get the same end results with need of the winch and hinge for the entire desk? Do you think it'd be plausible to build the desk at an angle and have just the chair and footrest tilt or do you find that the adjustability is important for comfort?

Sorry but seeing this again I'm forced to pick your brain a little as not a week ago I saw a nice desk in Sam's and commented to the wife that I wanted to build a desk to suit my needs...got a few ideas but now I'm thinking recline-o-desk!!!

Well welcome to the forums. If your near Macon GA, come have a gander.

In my recent move, I lost the cable to hook up my camera. If I find it ill pm ya some. The hinge is just an 8" piece of 1/2 galvanized ground rod inserted into the center of a 4" 1/2" id galvanized pipe and then 2x2" long pieces mounted to the frame. I tried some big gate hinges but they were not stable enough.
The winch is just an old winch I had on my jeep I had picked up for 10 bucks at a yard sale. Just reverse the polarity and, viola, up and down.

You could bolt it together, be a lot more work and I would be a little less comfortable counting on that. I dont have a torch, did all my cutting with a skill saw. Welders can be found cheap if ya look long enough.

The recline feature is nice, but other times you dont want to be layed back. I lean back most during long sessions when I get uncomfortable. Most 1-2 hour sessions, I dont move it. If you built it in that possision permanantly, it would be difficult to get in and out off and probably would be irritating in general. So while plausable to build the entire thing at the permanant angle, I dont think it would be....hehe...practical. (This from the guy who has this)

Thanks, Im a function over form guy any day. When I do something like this, my first though is to get it done. I cant work on a project day after day for months. I worked like mad on this thing, got it where it worked and then quit.

that is impressive! I like the watercooled addition too!

However, I would never trust myself to make a restraint like that.

I meant have the desk at a permanent angle with a chair and footrest on a platform that tilts kinda up INTO the desk area...easy in...easy out...and less weight for the mechanism to manhandle into the air. Leastwise I hope to GOD I never weigh as much as a desk and a heavy duty computing rig!

Believe me I don't relish the idea of climbing in and out of a reclined seat either I'm just not sure you got the gist of the original question. I wonder what other lift options one could work out under that set of circumstances...I thinking with less weight and a smaller overall footprint for the lift the amount of throw required would be within range of some small hydraulic cylinders like are commonly used to raise and lower boat motors...yeah baby!! Hydraulic ass-evator :D

Plus if you limit the elevated portions of the desk to just a desktop keyboard and monitors (mine are LCD thank god) you wouldn't have tp put so much into reinforcing the desk to withstand the weight of everything. Yours kicks so much more ass than the one in my head because it's all self contained I'm just trying to take the idea and make it less intensive :p no harm there right?

I just found this thread, and the link below on digg... I figured I would post it as it's relevant to anyone interested in this type of set-up.

Looks neat but the monitors don't elevate when the chair reclines. My desk is superiour! :p

You are correct. I am still waiting for a chair with armrests with two spots for a wireless split keyboard (well if it exists yet)... think of being able to spin around while typing!

well, i have been able to find split keyboards. not wireless ones, but you could always extend the wires around the back of the chair.

Yeah, I've seen then also. Unfortunately the wires would hinder my completely unecessary but inevitable 720 degree spins while typing. :)

No, people get fat by eating everything in sight.

Between the typical IT deskjob and my computer hobbies, I spend most of my waking day sitting on my ass, and have done so for the past 20years. I weigh the same 165 pounds I did 20 years ago when I got out of high school.

Overeating would seem to be just another addiction. If you can't cure it, then add an exercise addiction to the mix. :-0

it isn't like calories just mysteriously gravitate towards your body, or that fat people are photosynthetic and we don't realize it.

Wow, that thing is pretty amazing. How much gaming do you do in that chair? Like hours a week. That is deffinently pretty extreme mod, GJ on it.

I play over at 21CW which puts me in my chair for 12 hours straight of BF2 battle goodness on alternating Fridays and Saturdays. As my butt gets numb, I can raise the monitors and lean back and go Ahhhhhhh.

Other then that, its the usual 2 hours per evening of gaming.

That is just sick man I love it, and love the old school Joystick.

Oh I remember your post at 21cw. I believe someone commented on those monitors that could come flying down crushing your family jewels. Good thing you replaced them with LCDs so you don't have to worry about that anymore.:D

Bump for revival of creepy porn chair complete with easy access robe for spanking to porn on 3 screens and parrot trained to sound like a hot girl screaming "Oh baby, yeah.... " etc.

Awesome work just don't let it go too far :D

Correction, fatter.

Reminded me of this:

Disarray - I am very impressed with your setup.

Makes it look like something from the Command and Conquer franchise. You even have some parrots :d !!

memnoch_thedevil - lol you have a fine sense of humor. As an ex wow gamer i found that south park episode amusing as well. Ironically it isn't too far off :D
