Recommend 5.1 PC Surround Speaker System

Guys, I am looking to replace my old Altec Lansing THX ADA995 system and I have no idea where to go or how to start. Basic listening to music and some burning video clips adding sound for family and friends.

I am not looking to annoy my neighbors but I do want a good system... around 250 to 300 greenbacks will suffice.

I figure this time a year is perfect for finding good deals on good equipment... am I wrong?

All suggestions welcome.
 
For the purposes you mentioned, I believe that a stereo or 2.1 system would more than suffice?

Almost all music and home video clips will be stereo.

$250-300 will go quite a bit further in the stereo/2.1 world vs. what you would get for a 5.1 system.
