I want to replace my BFG 7800 GT OC card, and I have the opportunity to do a direct swap for a 7900 GS OC. It won't cost me anything.

I would probably end up getting a 2nd 7900 GS OC in the future, but I'm wondering if I should do this? Is the 7800 GT OC better than the 7900 GS OC? From what I've read, the only difference is the clock speeds.. they use the same # of pipelines, vertex shaders, etc. Just much faster clock speeds?

Thanks for the opinions..

good move do it. Stock for stock, the 7900gs is even capable of being marginally faster. And they overclock real well and surpasses stock 7900gt easily.

well I got the GS, but I dont get something.. now my settings in Half Life are all messed.. it says to use Trilinear rather than AF, and no AA is selected, whereas before everything was maxed out

No I haven't done that... maybe I should?
I am using 91.47, I didn't like 93.xx or whatever

Reset your settings to what you want and don't worry about the autodetect.

And google "anandtech simple 7900gt voltmod guide" and apply it to the 7900gs if it's the same layout.

Mine purrs nice at 681/800.

dunno if i wanna void my lifetime warranty, but I'll consider it... I already had to use my warranty once on my 7800 GT OC.

I just wanna know why the settings are changed, you know? I mean, the slower card told me to have AA and AF on, this one doesn't.. 3dmark06 scores DESTROY my 7800 tho

Who knows how it gets its recommended settings.

Maybe it doesn't know what that card is, or thinks it's a 7600GS or something.

Should I update my BIOS on the card? If so, any recommended BIOS' to use?

Hmm I've been wondering the same thing for my evga 7900gs. Although I did some searching and thought I came across someone saying the newer bios isn't as good. .04 vs .05 I think

Well I got the card.. running the following setup:

BFG 7900GS OC, 550MHz core clock, 1370MHz memory clock
P4 640 3.2GHz overclocked to 3.6GHz
