I'm planning to make a "smaller" gaming machine.

I already chosen my parts:

Intel 3770k
ASUS Maximus V Gene mATX
16GB Ram
Silverstone FT03 Case
1000W PSU etc etc

I need your suggestions for the Graphics card.

Should I just get SLI GTX 680s or get a single GTX 690 then get another after a few months?

What kind of display are you playing on that requires that much horsepower with a "smaller" rig? I'd normally say stick with one 680

Im using 3x24inch asus monitors + a 32inch LED TV as "auxiliary for stats / movies and stuff

Current Rig is

FX8150
AMD 6950x2
 
Either way you will be happy I think.. Given though that your going mATX 2 cards means there is no space inbetween them. So that said I would go with a single 690.
