Also, AFAIK, you can stretch video to fit 16:10. Hell, VLC even has a setting for this in it's aspect ratio pulldown. So, correct me if I'm wrong, but as long as the black bars aren't hardcoded, like in 16:9 enhanced DVDs, filling up the entire monitor shouldn't be a problem.
Lastly, isn't the brightness viewing angle issue common with most TN LCD panels? Or is it just that it's more noticeable on this particular model?
Media Player Classic has an option to automatically zoom and center the image so that black bars disappear. Image quality doesn't change much either. You might like it.
Top being darker than bottom is a common problem. Today I checked my boss's laptop. It's LCD screen is darker on the top side, when you look at it from down under. So even laptop LCD screens have this problem. The solution is to look at the screen from slightly above. The problem's more accentuated on 226BW since the stand is too high and it's really hard to look at the screen from slightly above unless you have a really high chair.
