Simple Norco 4020 Case Mod (24 drives now)

Its kind of crude but it works. I need to get a damn drill press, drilling holes by hand and trying to be accurate is almost impossible. Anyway the idea is to have 2 boot drives and 2 zfs log device drives (when ssd becomes affordable). It still needs a few touchups but this is the general idea.

You could even maybe do 3.5" drives too, but you'd need to be more exacting in the drilling of mount holes. Cooling up there might be more of a concern though.

Do you have bullet tipped drill bits? Those help a lot for accuracy.

Sun Fire X4500


Its was used for our backup network, but sun made them for like video / tv stations.

We have a couple of those Sun Fires at work. Some of our smaller storage arrays

I would have to agree that the Norco mod is a bit... crude. I'm sure it works fine, but knowing I had something that ghetto would kill me, even if it was out of site. I'd think about using a nice professionally cut piece of Aluminum.
