I need a laptop to carry. Its going to spend the majority of its time in my backpack being hauled around campus, so weight and size are crucial, along with respectable battery life.

I found this

Model: Toshiba Satellite U305-S5097 Laptop Computer
Screen Size: 13.3 inches
Weight: 4.6 lbs
Processor Options: Core 2 Duo

J&R Music and Computer World Satellite U305-S5097 Laptop Computer $949.99 + $18.80 = $968.79

Look up the Asus EEE PC, it's a ultraportable 7'in laptop for $199, it'll have a 900mhz Pentium M, 4gb Flash HDD, and 512mb ram.

Cheap and small, the problems, no optical drive, and it's not out yet...

Lenovo X60s. You can't go wrong.

I just saw the under a grand thing but ummm...whoops!

What's so appealing about small laptops? I don't get it. Is it a fad or something? I could care less if mine weighed 20 pounds not.

I don't have a laptop. I'm just wondering.

Maybe it's just me I don't know.

Having a smaller laptop gives you many options:
~Easy to carry, basically like a book in weight.
~Longer battery life.
~If all you need is word, email, messenger, why spend thousands on something else?

I have a 15.4" and do not mind taking it around to my classes, but the battery life sucks on it. So I am looking into getting a ~13" laptop so I get way better battery life, and so it will fit better on desks in classrooms. Apparently many of the classrooms I am in have smaller individual desk for some reason.

Not all 15.4's have bad battery life. Mine can scrape into the 6+ hour mark if just doing word and text stuff. Web (nic connection) and normal use 5 hours, wifi 4 hours, and gaming/dvd 3 hours.

12 cell battery FTW.

But if your looking for small then stay small. I wanted a notebook that I could game on, do school work and get a good battery life. Thats when I found my setup :)

2 day 15% off Thinkpad X60 notebooks and Tablets with code: USPX60FOR48 Exp 7/12

Cheapest Thinkpad X60 Core 2 Duo T5500 1.6Ghz 512MB/60GB, 12in Screen, Vista Business - $1194 - 15% off = $1094

A bit more than what your thinking but its light and small :D.

Well that is what my 15.4" laptop is, a top end gaming rig (though showing age already), but used for school work when there. I just realized though after a year of use that a smaller more compact notebook would be much better for daily use in classroom & also to take with me to work.

Also, yes a 12cell battery will do that, I only have a 6cell in mine & have had many chances to pick up a 9 or 12, but just did not feel the need.

the fact they are smaller and lighter then 15"s. I took my 12 incher halfway around the fricking world (India for a month), and when you have to lug around a months worth of stuff, you really will appreciate the 2-3 pounds that little laptop saves compared to a normal laptop

i personally think 12" is the perfect size for a mobile laptop, its not so small that it hinders usage (my msi has normal size keys), yet its smaller and lighter then a 15".

now when you hardly take your laptop anywhere, or when it is your main machine, then a 15" would make more sense, but for a second, decidedly mobile system, ultraportables are the way to go imho

Where did you get it?

Where did you get it?

a local shop in holland

this is the best i could find in 5 mins on a US website:

http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=265616

its only single core, half my ram. It seems that for a laptop along my spec you would pay at least $150 at ZZF, and newegg doesnt have any MSI laptops in their assortment right now.

another tip, the same chasis as i have is available as a barebone, msi type number 1058, just add your own HDD cpu and ram and your set

that zzf price isn't very good. for an extra $100 you can get a refurb Macbook w/core 2 duo.

i know, assuming a roughly 1 on 1 euro to dollar conversion rate (which for computer tech sadly still applies :( ) the exact specs of my laptop would cost you at least 200 bucks extra with the ZZF pricing

i think you should be able to find one a good bit cheaper, and else perhaps the 999 macbook is an option?
