I'm looking for a software package that will allow me to record what is happening on my screen and then allow me to add comments to the video for instructional purposes.

We are trying to create videos that show how a procedure is done for several of our software packages at work.

Any ideas would be appreciated!!

Or Camtasia, a good commercial product. I use all three products here, each serves a purpose.

What would those applications that I have to pay for do better than the free Camstudio?

I like the added effects and transitions within Camtasia. But, it's a hard sell for options that you really need in it.

I would start with Camstudio (free) and work with it. Most of our guys use it, only a handful have licenses for Camtasia and Captivate. For official work I (have to) use Camtasia, which has a fairly big learning curve, IMO. For at home and traveling I use Camstudio. Some of our guys love Captivate, but they also fall back to Camstudio at times.
