an interesting situation has come up for me. i was going to spend christmas money on buying an htpc since i recently got rid of my tivo service (for numerous customer service related issues) and because the motorola set-top-dvr provided by my cable company sucks (except for the fact that i can record HD in perfect quality).

anyway, i have a p2 400 acting as a fileserver, a good gaming rig (which was great when i first got it about 15 months ago) and a modded xbox running XBMC. The 400 certainly isn't good enough to do much but normal fileserving, and i like the xbox well enough as a media conduit but neither can do recording. i am, however, getting a free p3 800 w/ 512mb of ram and was wondering if that would be good enough to throw my fileserver drives in and a pvr-250 (or other pci tuner/encoder) to act as a media capture box/server and just keep using XBMC to get the media to my home theater?

any thoughts? thanks in advance!
