If I'm using vCenter to manage a local datacenter and a remote site cluster, can I use SRM to protect the remote site cluster back to the local datacenter without vCenter at the remote site?

For VMWare SRM you need to have a vCenter server on each side.

I'm not sure if Veeam or vRanger would replicate the VMs without the vCenter requirement.

Yeah that's what I figured, guess Veeam is sticking around. I was hoping that using vCenter to manage both the remote and recovery site I could do it.

You can get Essentials Plus Kit which comes with vcenter for $5k, it comes with VM Replication appliance and it works great.

Yes, you need two vCenters. Why? Because the one in Prod may not be online in a real failure so you initiate the failover event from the DR side.

That's only true if you're managing with a local vCenter. I'm managing the remote site via local datacenter vCenter. So technically my failover and prod site is managed by the same vCenter.

Either way it doesn't appear that this can be done without one at each site.

standalone replication from VMware in 5.1 wil ldo this, but if the VC is down, you're down down.
