I'm trying to get a try some new things out, I want to play some text based games on my laptop. I want some like Cyberpunk, Horror, you name it I pretty much want to try it. WinXP, but if I'm correct most text based games run in a DOS window, but I'm pretty damn new to text based adventures!

an easy way to play some old text games is through IM check this out

If you have an AOL Instant Messenger account, send an IM to InfocomBot, InfocomBot2, or InfocomBot3. I set up an automated bot to play classic Infocom text adventure games from your favorite IM client, T-Mobile Sidekick, or any other device that connects to AIM. It supports "save" and "restore" commands, so you don't need to lose your place.

Most people involved with them use the term "interactive fiction" when talking aboutl "text adventures". Here's 2 sites that'll get you most of the current activitiy in the genre.

The other major class of text-based games are the "Roguelike" games such as Nethack and Angband. A quick googling will get you plenty of info on these, too.

Check out this article for items to search using Google. Or just do searchs on "Roguelike", "Moria", "Angband", and "ADOM". Nethack was already listed above.
