The Fallout New Vegas Thread * will contain spoilers *

Quick question since I'm right here, who is the best to pick for the new Sherriff of Primm? I just re-programmed Slim from the Casino and Beagle got annoyed with me. I'd still like to hear from other people who might've done a min/max unarmed build and how they are or aren't enjoying it.

Apologies if this has been asked before, but if I part ways with a follower, will I be able to go back to where I got him and 'recruit' him again? I haven't reached the strip yet, so I don't have the option to send him to my home there.

I chose the convict from NCRCF and Beagle wasn't too happy either because he got demoted or something along those lines. Maybe recruiting from NCR was the better choice.

On a related note, the first time I went to the correctional facility I got my ass kicked. I had to level up some more just to survive.

I wasn't expecting a shooter at all. But New Vegas is clearly a combat heavy RPG. Yeah, I guess you could talk your way through the wasteland if you wanted to. Is your character equipped with the ballerina slippers as well? :D

If you said you were playing this game like a shooter, I would have nothing to say. You can pretty much treat the game as such if you want. After all, the game is a hybrid.

As for my character, I am having fun with those nightkin clubs.

I find it laughable and pathetic that Obsidian is being so obdurate about this.

It hasn't been long since the game was released. And some fixes require more careful fixing than a quick fix. Despite how incomplete their patching is, Obsidian is putting Bethseda's patching to shame.

Due to the VATS nerf, I haven't taken any abilities affecting VATS (commando, sniper, etc) and there are some really nice perks out there that I've overlooked in previous games in favor of combat-oriented ones..

Friend of the Night - This perk is AMAZING even though it's purely cosmetic. This makes playing at night so much more enjoyable. I used to loathe playing during the night hours cause of the visibility penalty and how crummy things in general look in the dark. This perk makes nighttime look fantastic. A huge plus for playing Sneak characters too now that you have the cover of darkness and good graphics.

Run 'n Gun - Self-explanatory but very nice for cramped spaces and advancing on enemies when you're too close to use your snipe rifle and don't want to waste VATS points.

Quick Draw - Absolutely god-send for us FPS players out there that have a compulsive habit of quick-swapping weapons. Allows you to quickly swap between weapons without the huge delay if you don't have this perk. I love it when I can holster my sniper rifle instantly if an enemy makes it through, execute the Ranger Takedown maneuver, and quickly swap to my machete to lop off a limb when they''re on the ground.

That's awesome, I can see how quickdraw is more awesome than it looks. I'm going to try your trick. I always wondered about Friend of the Night, thought it was a throw away perk. Guess not.

You know you can do both, right?

My character is 8 INT, 70 Guns and 70 Speech right now.

The writing in this game is pretty much the main draw so it'd be wrong to just ignore it.

How do I take out Robots and armored foes? Feels like I just tickle them, its really frustrating since I essentially can't kill them

That's what Armor Piercing ammo is for. Most vendors should have some.

Agreed, I also enjoyed the one with the solar panels for the NCR. There's some really funny/clever writing in this game.

"They asked me how well I understood theoretical physics. I said I had a theoretical degree in physics. They said welcome aboard."

At least starting out, AP ammo isn't readily available. The next best things are weapons with slower rate of fire, but have each shot count. Run behind a bot with a sledge hammer.

I'm not sure, but I wonder if a flamethrower bypasses armour.

I really enjoyed the music with that.

They have a radio station? It's not blackmountain radio is it?

No one ever has any AP ammo, at most they have like 8 for sale....
You can make your own, with the right ingredients and a reloading bench.

Barring that, you get plenty just looting bodies and containers. Vacuum everything up in sight.

The only ammo I've purchased to date is a few dozen 5.56 mm and 9 mm, just the regular ammo, and I try to shoot everything in the head with a combination of VATS and iron sights. This is the post apocalypse so make every bullet count. If it's an easy target, like a radscorpion I just take out my brass knuckles or maybe my Chopper and beat the crap out of it instead.

After my 10th hour of play I'm level 7 and the game finally crashed on me when I was in the middle of switching weapons during a tussle with the Romans. I got to say that this game isn't exactly a perfect release, I've noticed numerous issues that weren't even present in Fallout3. Nothing gamestopping though I've noticed some of my enemies (and friends, too) turn into penscribble monsters of broken, floating textures. Also, when a gunfight is happening somewhere, the sound is not properly doppled... I mean, it could be happening a few screens away, but it sounds like it's right next to me.

Oh well, I am enjoying my new status as a beta tester, but I still like this game. A few more patches and it is really going to shine; I'm looking forward to the inevitable DLC which should expand this original release nicely.

About Primm (again), I am able to make Primm Slim sherriff right now. But should I instead make an NCR guy the sherriff? I would need to go to the Mojave Outpost to find more troops, is that fairly easy at level 3 (almost 4)?

You can definitely make it if you don't stop to fight every little thing, I was about level 5 when I reached the Outpost.

As for making someone Sheriff I think that picking the robot is the best choice since you get discounts in Primm. The deputy loses his job and is not happy no matter what you pick. The other choices seem to affect you negatively as the Primms are just not happy because they are either under the NCR tax boot or getting roughed up by an ex-con in charge. I didn't go to the Prison Camp to find that guy because that place is a deathtrap at a low level. I just ran past it as fast as I could.

This Friend of the Night perk sounds interesting - it actually alters the look of the game?

If you go to the outpost, you will need a high speech skill. If you go to the prison then you will still have to go to the outpost, but now you'll need a high Barter ability.

Fix the robot now.

Also, if you're on the outs with Powder Gangers then you're going to have to fight your way through the prison.

Three days after you place a mayor in Primm the place comes alive - so the quicker the better.

Makes night time playing easier and more enjoyable without being a lame cheat outright.

It's more effective than using a the pip boy light. Highly recommended.

I am really loving this game so far. I haven't really enjoyed a game like this since, well Fallout 3. I had the Nvidia hitching and the npc slowdowns. Both of which fixes were quickly posted on the forums. Other than that the game has been far more stable than FO3 was at launch for me.

I'll finish this with very few mods if any I'm sure but I can't wait to come back to this in a few months once the modding community has matured and see what New Vegas has to offer.

Well, I tried the alternate D3D9 dll, which is tweaked for AMD video cards in mind. I don't get the low res texture popping in and out anymore, so for my system, this one seems better than the other other d3d9 dll.

I just did the quest for "fly away" ghouls west of novak. Great stuff. I'm glad I didn't just shoot everyone.

The only weapon upgrade ive got so far was the scope for the 9mm. I went to the weapon page in the pip boy, and pressed the x key (I think) to "mod" then it showed the list of compatible parts

Cheers. I edited it out because I found out how to do it right after posting that, not trying to avoid looking stupid.

This is the first game of this type I've really enjoyed playing as a particular character style. I've tried playing through F3 a half-dozen times with all number of mods - a lot of which seem to have been incorporated in NV - and never completed it, and always went for a stealth-based build and just worked with the best of what I found weapon wise. NV seems much better designed in terms of skills and perks: the condensation of skill trees means it's easier to focus, and the perks can complement each other really well.

Currently going for Speech/Guns/Melee and loving it. Geared up with the fast reload, quick draw, cowboy weapon bonus and similar perks, and having a lot of success talking my way through situations and opening up hidden quest lines. The addition of common ammo for sidearms and rifles is great for hardcore where weight's an issue, too. One of those legion Gladius things and Lucky for up-close and a Cowboy rifle for popping heads at range. The game's a winner, loving the balls off it. Couple of bugs, but if F3 won GOTY and this doesn't something's gone very wrong.

Shit, none of that was interesting but I could talk all day about this game. It's fun as a bag of kittens.

i tried this with my 4800 and the game auto recognized my card as a 7900gto... so i had to remove it.

umm quick question,, Ive been playing with both Ed-E and a 2nd human companions sometimes veronica and sometines boone.. am i not supposed to be able to have ed-e and a hman at same time? it wont let me do say boone and veronica together..

Did the same for me. I just carried on as normal, didn't seem to affect performance negatively.

ahh my game started crawling when i tried to play with it so just removed it.. really wish i had a 4890 or 1gb 4870 since at 1920 x 1200 i feel like iam rigth on the cusp of good fps max settings except 4x aa

Also, if you're on the outs with Powder Gangers then you're going to have to fight your way through the prison.

Actually, this isn't true at all.

If you have a Powder Ganger outfit, the guard at the gate will recognize you but you can bribe him with 100 caps to let you in. Inside, none of the Powder Gangers will attack you as long as you're still wearing the outfit.

I really enjoyed the music with that.

Yeah right at the end, haha that was great :D

Yeah I didn't test the weapon though I'm trying to side with the NCR. Save that for an "evil" play through where I side with Caesers lot :)

"They asked me how well I understood theoretical physics. I said I had a theoretical degree in physics. They said welcome aboard."

That guy is such an idiot, trying to fix the place with the computer that controls the intercom ROFL, there's so many little gems in this game.

In usual fallout style its up to you to chose, usually the choices in the game aren't strictly best one way, you'll get different benefits from different choices and actions, I went to the prison and freed the sheriff.

It's expected with the fix, everyone gets it, there's no negative impact.

Well I'm done for the night, 5am is plenty late enough, I would honest keep playing this game all night if I could but I have a headache now lol, need some rest so I can play it all tomorrow :)

When the game isn't crashing, I'm loving every second of it. Getting insta-crit kills with the sniper rifle and JSP handloads is all kinds of awesome. I turned on hardcore mode and took out Boone...as much as I liked him, even with him on melee only mode, he was steamrolling everything. Plus, I wanted his sunglasses.

Just grabbed the Explorer perk at level 18 (shows all map locations) and am visiting everything.

The Thorn is pretty borked, you can't finish the Giant Radscorpion arena fight and in custom fights the two sides just stare at each other.

The game keeps revealing gem after gem though, the writing and design is phenomenal.

I tested out the Run 'n Gun perk last night that lets you strafe while firing a firearm with no penalty. Seems to work pretty well, I'm noticing it's easier now to take down people while moving.

I'm looking for unique weapons. so far i've got...

Maria (from checkered jacket mans mess of a corpse)
Bumper sword (super mutant leader in REPCONN test site basement)
Nephi's golf driver (don't rememeber, from a ghoul I think)
That gun - (stolen from Novac gift shop store room)
Tribeam laser rifle (van graff shop - van graff corpse)
Plasma caster (van graff body)
Plasma defender (van graff body)
multiplas rifle (van graff body)
Spiked knuckles - Love and hate (bonnie springs raiders [44 damages and no full strength!)
Trail carbine - (Bonnie springs raiders)

Not sure if all of them are unique. And those are just the ones I remember from my inventory., and I no where near finnished :D Does anyone else remember any others?

SPOILER

I just got Lucky a few hours ago, it's a .357 revolver. Has a nice custom graphic.

dmg/attack: 30
DPS: 82

I found it in a locked safe, 75lp needed at the Bison Hotel in Primm.

I found a named bb gun in a random shack.

I saw a lot of the trail carbines and tribeam lasers in late game area I was in.

Now that I finished with ranged good character. Im going to go unarmed and use the ballistic fists that the legion high ups use. Those things just tore through my power armor.

I've got the Luvky revolver (seems like it has a better crit percentage?). The unique plasma rifle from the robco factory, and This Macine (an m1 garand I think) from fort mclarran.

So far I've favored This Machine above most of the guns. I'll have to keep looking for others.

I just beat the game in hardcore mode and all I can say is WOW!

I liked Fallout 3, but this one is so much better. I was only 23 hours in when I finished, but there was not a single hour of repetitive story element. The writing was top notch through and through.

I went with a melee-explosives-speech character named Bruce Lee and it started off slow at first. However, I eventually got my hands on the ballistic fist and it was game over one shotting everything including death claws. Then I got my buddy Boone the unique laser rifle and we owned New Vegas. I was planning on doing all the side quests before finishing the game, but when I accidentally stepped on the boat to the Legion fort and Boone said "this might be our last boat ride together, are you sure you want to go?" I just had to honor my buddy and ride with him. We demolished everyone there including Caesar, and then I gave Benny a VATS ballistic fist fully repaired 100+ dps uppercut. From there the main story line was just too good to not finish.

Anyhow, this game is definitely GOTY material to me. For those just starting out, the 3 most important skills if I could do it all over again (and I definitely will) are:

1. Lockpick or Science (lockpick for caps and items, science to make quests easier, and sometimes both skills open the same door/chest)
2. Speech (almost every quest had a speech / barter option, but I feel like speech is more important)
3. Any combat skill (there are so many good items no matter what branch you decide)

If you have Guns tagged, definitely pick up the unique varmint rifle, Ratslayer. Baby comes pre-modded with an extended magazine, silencer, night-vision scope, and a sleek black and chrome finish. Coupled with the fact that varmint rifles have the highest crit damage multipliers while also dealing significant limb damage, this is easily the best weapon you'll have for a majority of the game. I have the unique Gobi sniper rifle but I find myself still using Ratslayer for a majority of my snipe kills.

Don't forget the Anti-material Rifle. It's got some mean hit to it.
