These Polks a good deal at $170 shipped?

That isn't a bad deal. There will be a frequency hole unless you're crossing the sub over at 100hz, however. You're also going to need to rely on a decent sub for the midbass, so maybe even crossed over higher. It comes with mounting, which is a plus.

Is your primary use going to be HT?

Yep, would be for TV/movie use, possibly some music and gaming but nothing studio-quality necessary.
Good point about the freq hole; would prefer if sub didn't have to cross over above about 80Hz.

You would probably want to cross those at least at 150hz as the f3 is 130hz on those. A half octave higher than f3 would be up around 200hz.

it would be slightly more

but if you have room for them (as the speakers themselves would be bigger)

i would get these

^That is a much better way to go. For the price, they are good. I've had 4x Monitor 40's and a CS1 center for a couple years, not bad at all. They'll probably end up in FS/FT later this year. I got the upgrade bug and my current sub makes them feel a little anemic.

i have had my speakers/receiver awhile now...so the receiver is a couple year old model.

I have an about 2~yr old Pioneer VSX-519V (5.1) it was under $200 from newegg when I got it and I have no complaint with it. Probably not the most feature rich/best receiver in the world but it get's the job done pretty well for us here.

I'm not sure I might have got a 7.1 receiver in retrospect but ....meh...

seconded. this is my exact setup as well but with the PSW505 sub instead. The polks in the OP are ok, but this setup is a lot more speaker for the money.. and thats literally too (they're much larger) If you've got tight spaces to put them in (or a significant other to convince) then the original set might be a safer choice

I wish they were still selling the Polk dsw micropro 1000 for 300. That was such a great deal I want two!
