Looking to possibly buy a 7990 now they've come down in price, really not sure though if there's any benefit to it, my current config is a 6990+6970. Would it be more of a side grade than an upgrade in performance terms?

I've got a 6950x6950x6970 setup that I considered replacing with a pair of 7970. My performance research showed that my tri-fire setup was still slightly faster than a pair of 7970. It seemed like only a pair of 7990 would be faster so I decided to stick with what I had.

Now that the 290X is released I think just one will be about the same speed and two will definitely be faster.

Been looking around and cant find much comparing the setups, closest I got was benchmarks comparing 6990 to 7970xxfire and the 7979's decimated the 6990. Though im not too sure how much extra the third card tightens up those numbers.

well, a 7970 CF setup is around 35-40% faster than a single 290x at 2560x1600. With the 69xx cards, I'm not sure not well trifire scales but seems like it may be a sidegrade in terms of performance. Obviously you'd gain a lot in other aspects, less heat due to lower wattage overall, no scaling issues.

Then there is Mantle. The 69xx cards aren't based on GCN architecture unlike the 7900 series.

Its a pain to find anything to compare it to, 1 7970 is a bit slower than 2 6970's game dependant, but the third card skews everything. :(

Question is - do you need the performance? Are you sick of dealing with issues (assuming you have any)? Are you just bored? If it's yes to any of those, I say go for it.

I just looked on NewEgg earlier today at the 7990...looks like prices are up again (around $800) when they used to be around $700 earlier. I'd say hold off until you see that $700 mark. Can only be a matter of time now.

Performance over all else, I play in Eyefinity res 5760x1080 so needs a good bit of grunt. Based in the uk so the card is available for £400 which is a load less than it was a few months back. Just hoping it can power bf4 with some of the bells and whistles at better frame rates than my current setup, which going by responses ive had seems to be 50\50, some saying its a sidegrade and others on other forums saying its a definite upgrade.

Well, going 6990 +6970 to 7990 only today may be a sidegrade...BUT you can always add a 7970 or R9 280X for a big boost. I say go for it. Those 6xxx cards are only going to go down in value over time. Get the 7990 while it's at or near rock bottom and then keep an eye peeled for a solid used 7970 for a great price. There should be a few folks moving to 290/290X - market should be ripe for buyers.

Its not going to be a sidegrade 7990 will smoke it. Especially at 5760x1080 that 2gb 256 bit will be a limiting factor. Even if framerates are near the same the 7990 will be significantly smoother in all situations. Especially since 79xx overclock like crazy and scale really well while 69xx overclock like crap.

7970GHz CF should be faster. Anyways CF does not scale that well after two cards.

I went from 6970 CF to 7970GHz CF and enjoy it big time.

Well I am at 1600p (30" Dell). With new setup every game can be set up to max details/eye candy.
