This may be a dumb question but could I use two sets (3 sticks each) of different memory types? I have a set of Corsair Dominator 3x2gb 1600mhz right now. Could I get a set of 3x2gb Gskillz 1600mhz in order to get 12gb of ram or do all 6 sticks have to be matching?

Make sure the ram voltage is the same. Also since DDR3 1600 is significantly faster than the maximum supported ram speed of DDR3 1066 that the memory controller on the CPU is designed to handle and you will be populating all 6 slots you may have to increase the IMC voltage, loosen the timings, lower the ram frequency and increase the ram voltage to get this to work.

So as long as the memory being used in triple channel are the same, it should work? The two sets can be from different brands/models?

memory density should match for the best compatibility. you'll also want to make sure they match in voltage and timings too.

you should be ok.

brand doesn't matter.

So long as they are stable at the same settings (speed, voltage and timings) then go ahead :)
