Coming from an X850XT on PCI-E, would I notice a good difference, worth of the price, for a 7900GS? Would I see a good jump?

i've never had an x850xt, but so far i'm pleasantly surprised at how well the 7900gs handles just about everything i throw at it right now (even in 1920x1200).

and if you grab the evga version for $185 on the egg, then you a downpayment on a real big upgrade (i.e. 7900gtx or g80) that's good until the middle of february, when the prices on those top-end cards will have come down significantlly. hard to argue with that.

Thanks. I like NV's drivers more than ATI's. I'd hate to make a lateral move with cards...

Not Worth it it. I would wait and go straight for the 8800GTS. I am moving from a X800 Pro to a 8800GTS. Just make sure you have a Conroe setup to really power these new 8800 cards.

Granted Nvidia's drivers are better, and the 7900 has SM 3.0, I would still wait and get a 7900GTO X1900XT, but a new 8800 card would be better.

"Worth it" is relative.

Acceptable performance for price paid.

For some, comparing a $185 card to a $489 card is where the debate ends.

For me, the 7900GS overclocks like heck, and at 1280x1024 works great.

Yeah, really. I would be playing at 1280 x1024 almost the entire time, and I, like most of the members here, can only dream about getting an 8800series card.

I think i'm going to shoot for one.

I had a 7900gs before my 7900gto, and I can say its a great card! Only reason I got rid of it, is my buddy was gonna order the same card, so I sold him mine (2 weeks old, he saved on shipping) for the price i got it for, and chipped in the extra cash for a GTO, which was a steal @ 270 canadian, alas it cannot be found anymore...for that price, at the very least!

I just got a 7900GS upgrading from a BFG 6800OC (that was overclocked further by me to go to 6800GT speeds (minus the extra memory)).

I play only at 1280x1024 and the 7900GS will play anything i throw at it. At that res it can max out BF2 and BF2142 without a sweat.

I also agree that the NV drivers are way better than ATI, that is the main reason i would not buy an ati card right now ;)

Yeah, reallly. The only reason I got the 7900GS was cuz the 7900GTO was sold out, and the 7950GT was a retarded price for the slight performance increase.

I did a five minute conductive paint mod on mine, and OC'd from 450/560 stock to 681/800 - works for me.

Worth upgrading??

How's the fan on the 7900GS? I KNOW it'll be better than the ATI's stock fan, but any more help on that? Loud? Noisy?

I just purchased the PNY 7900 GS from Best Buy ($150 this week), and it is super quiet most of the time. Even under heavy load, you can barely hear the fan.

I jumped from 6800GT to 7900GS and it's a big jump for me. Since i play most times in 1280x1024, it's sufficient. I will jump on the sli bandwagon when ppl start getting rid of their XFX 7900GS 480M for cheap  I will jump on DX10 stuff only when it's time to build a new computer in 1-2 years from now.
