Upgrading from a X1800

So my current Setup is an Amd X2 4000, 2 gig Drr2 ram, (corsair value), and my x1800. In anticipation of BioShock, Overlord, and a few other games, Im trying to guage what I should upgrade first. The HD 2900 looks like an easy answer, but according to some scuttlebutt I heard DX 10.1 features are coming out in Sept, and the 1gig version of the card has also been announced. Should I hold on a purchase until the 1gig version's price dips a bit or should I blow my load on the HD 2900 XT 512Mb card now. If Im not typing correctly or clearly, Its cause Im on a massive amount of pain killers now.

I really wanted a 2900XT but wont go near it after reading the reports on its performance and image issues.

I'd get a 640MB 8800GTS or the GTX.
