The default configuration of 512Mb DDR2-667 on the HP Media Server EX470/EX475 is ridiculous, because the box requires >600Mb RAM at bootup with all the add-ins that HP throws in. Not surprisingly, it swaps like mad.

The HP Media Server EX470/EX475 has one DDR2 memory slot which operates at DDR2-667. It uses the default SPD timings for its memory, so I would like to find a 2Gb DDR2-667 stick at 3-3-3 timings, if one exists.

Does anyone know of a 2Gb DDR2-667 stick with SPD timings of 3-3-3, or a DDR2-800 stick that is set with SPD timings of 3-3-3 @ DDR2-667 speed?

How to upgrade the HP Media Server EX470/EX475

  1. Open the door.

  2. There are two small black screws to the right of the lock in the center of the machine. Unscrew them.

  3. Remove the front plate.

  4. Remove the left and right silver screws. One will be on the far right holding the power supply in and the other will be on the far left holding the door in place.

  5. Remove all drives. Stack them in the order you took them out to remember.

  6. Snap the silver top plate forward should slide right off.

  7. Remove the cables two white on back left of the system and then the front cable that controls the LEDS.

  8. Stick your hand straight back and "POP" the Drive Back Plane off the mother board. (Will require a little force but go easy)

The unit should now slide out as one to you.

  9. Remove existing memory and install new memory.
