I want to connect my PS2 to the Internet via my wireless network. I got a Belkin 54g router for $30 at Circuit City, and it has the option to work as an Access Point. Is that what I need to do?

You don't use the router as the adapter. You need a wireless adapter that connects to the PS2 and transmits to the access point (your router).

^Bingo. I did the same for my Xbox awhile ago. You need to set up your wireless router to distribute enough addresses for all computers on the network + 1 for the PS2. Then just plug in and you're good to go. Make sure to follow the adapter's instructions though ;)
