Using Snapstream's IR reciever with universal remote

Im pretty much broke right now, so i was thinking of just spending the 26 bucks on a snapstream remote since i should have my HTPC up and running by this weekend. I was wondering though, can i just use that IR reciever that comes with it with something like winLIRC later on when i buy a universal home theater remote? Otherwise i would have to purchase a USB URIT for 50 bucks, but i dont ever really plan on needing or using the IR blaster, so that would just be a waste of money.

So i guess i just want to know if i can use the IR reciever that comes with a snapstream with a universal remote.
