vcr tape-- what am i doing wrong

this seemed so simple.. I had a vcr tape tape wouldn't fast foward or rewind in my vcr... although all my others work fine...something in side the tape had broken loose and was rattling.. so I took the tape apart and took the spool out and then placed that spool into another cassette that was working... no loose parts now..the tape is strung correctly and when I push the release in on the botton both reels turn freely.. but when I put it back into the machine its a no go..WTF..is it possible the tension is too tight..I cant imagine it being anything else..anyone run it this before..
