I'm speechless about quality of our old Xserve RAID [ 2 controllers 14x500Gb]

48k+ working hours under moderate load and not a single drive dropped . The drives are Hitachi's Deskstar !! Impressive. To bad Apple discontinued Xserve raid line .

edit:
Not all of the time it was in the cooled server room like now- first 2 years the unit sits in editors room where was relativity hot. But even in controlled environment 48k hours is great for desktop! drives. Hell ,the enterprise drives [WD,Hitachi] in our other NAS or FC storages not lasts more of 3-4 years approximately .

I dont work with this stuff so I dont understand. Can you explain what is so remarkable?

It's a file server/NAS that has been going almost 6 years with nothing failing.

Well, hard drives have a failure rate of roughly 10% per year.

At that rate he should have lost at least half the original drives in the time he was running this server. He hit the production lot jackpot with that bunch of drives,

Hitachi prolly would buy them back so they could analyse them to make sure that never happens again. :D

Hard drives are Hitachi's Deskstars but with additional "Apple" logo at them ;)

Yes, RAID3 but only at that storage-video editing with very large files.

Under 4% AFR for enterprise drives in proper enclosures. Burn-in can help a lot too. Still at year 6 you are risking old age deaths.

I was just about to buy an XServe and then they were discontinued.
