Hi all. I'm considering getting a discrete sound card, and I want to know what I have to gain. I use a variety of headsets for my pc, and M-Audio A40 speakers for when I'm not using a headset. So far I've been pleased with the integrated audio on my MSI P55-GD80.

What do I have to gain for getting a discrete card for sound?

For headphone gaming, Dolby Headphone or CMSS-3D, which both emulate 3D sound through stereo headphones quite well.

Usually a headphone amplifier as well, or at least a headphone jack with much more power behind it.

Then you have a lower noise floor and generally better sound quality.

You should notice a difference, especially with headphones, and with products like the Xonar DG now out on the market, you can do so at a price point below $30.
